Last race of the season
What a weekend! up at day break yesterday and traveled down To checkendon for the last race of the series and the last race of the Dryland mushing season. Race start was 08:30 but bad news, the humidity was 70% and temps climbing which aint good for a Staff cross Husky with a dense double coat still only half shed.
It became apparent about 5 mins in that Marley wasn't up for it and as soon as we hit the open sections the clouds cleared an the heat soared. I needed two good runs this weekend to stand a chance in the championships but in that heat I just pulled him up and cantered around. so not a good start with a 17:33 time on the first run (we average 15:40) but there is no way I'm risking a hair on my dogs back. so with nothing to do in the afternoon we walked the course and the little git pulled all the way around. neither dogs would settle so more walking into the night and then to bed for an early one as the race had been brought forward to 8am due to the temps on sat.
Woke up at 04:44 because of all the birds cheeping and then the bloody huskies started singing and managed to doze until 7am. Walked the dogs and got the pee and poops out the way and massaged Marley up ready for the race. The night before I actually hugged him and told him not to worry about the next race and that we were just going out for fun.
OMG Bam! I have never seen him so up for it, never seen a dog jump up backward and spin around on the start line before either lol. it was like he had something to prove and went like he had a rocket up his backside. and this is after a 5k bikejor and 10k walking the day before in searing heat.... He did me well proud smashing our personal best set in March when it was much cooler by nearly 1 min to 14:53.
We didn't place in the top three (4th I think) but boy am I proud of him. Could never have asked for a better end to the season. Roll on September
Sorry for the long post but I'm still Hyper and cant stop hugging the furry one who is full of treats and fast asleep

Re: Last race of the season
Thanks guys, still brimming with pride
Shegsy, She was with my brother on the start/finish waiting for us as this place only allows one dog bikejor as its so narrow and technical.
Inez the massage does help but I'm not sure my pep talk got through lol. I think it's his big ole Staffy heart and will to please that pulled us through, he was zipping through the corners like a good un

Ah ok Nathan. Marley was indeed whipping round all those corners. You can see that he just wants to do everything right for you.
Unconditional love for you and I'm sure it's reciprocated to your babies also

Nice one, Nathan. Every time I watch your videos it makes me come closer to actually giving this a go rather than just taking Nita out for a good run with the bike

Re: Last race of the season
Thanks for the stalking Mia lol
Haizum74 do it mate! you will love it. its so much fun for you and the dog, quite cheap to start out with and great for bonding. plenty of groups around these days if you want to try a group run. Its also a good distance for Staffies as they generally go all guns blazing with great agility too. have made some good friends running staffies and staffy crosses. one was even a DA rescue who now loves to go out and run with the pack. its a different mindset for them and a release for all the energy.
And thanks Ian, the boy is doing wonders but when I strap Laska in she works just as hard so plenrty of races next season with both one and two dog bikejor. will be training really hard over the summer on my bike skills as that is what is letting us down right now.... just haven't the balls to go full into the corners lol

I think we're going to Nathan. Only you to blame of course just in 'training' now. Don't worry though, we aren't a patch on you guys.
