Advice - Leaving Staffy at home
So the time has come where I have to leave my Staffy (13 months old) at home for roughly 9 hours.
The thought of it is killing me but at the moment is killing me but at the moment I do not have any other options.
He will be home alone from 8am to 5pm, he has never ever been without someone for atleast 3 hours.
Can people give me any ideas to how I can help him cope with this? Leave the radio on? TV? etc?
We can't find anyone to pop in at lunch time and cannot afford doggy day care.
HELP PLEASE

Re: Advice - Leaving Staffy at home
Hi. This is a big change if it's not happened before, can you ease him into it by leaving him a little longer each time you go rather than all 9 hours at once initially ? It's not easy I know but they do spend most of their time sleeping when we're out. Make sure you leave some treats, toys, things to keep him amused. Good luck let us know how you get on !

I agree, try and build up to it before going back to work. As Bek has said, leaving treats and such like to find is good. Also try leaving the radio on and leave an item of your clothing nearby too.

I would agree with building up to it. If that isn't possible than make sure to give him a good long walk and leave him with plenty of entertainment and things to chew. The TV or radio does indeed help.

Gradually leave him as said any rooms you dnt want the dog in fence the area off and tidy away cables any edibles or anything u dnt want chewed . I would leave the radio at either a calm music channel or with plenty of conversation

Re: Advice - Leaving Staffy at home
We do that with Rio, we have to because of our jobs but thankfully, as long as he his bed and his Kong toys, he's happy to chew on them and sleep until we come home. I would make sure that he has enough to entertain him toy wise, and leave the radio on for him, that's what we do and he's quite happy. I'd also be prepared for any toilet accidents if he's not litter trained, we haven't had any yet but i wouldn't be angry if he couldn't hold it, keep us updated

Yup agree with all those above. In order to mitigate any unwanted chewing I would suggest a good walk to tire him out so that he sleeps much of the time away. As suggested, plenty of toys to mess about with too.

Re: Advice - Leaving Staffy at home
We started off leaving Millie in for very short times 5 to 10 minutes when she was young, then just upped the time a little longer each time, she has never destroyed anything in the house, and anytime we do need to leave her she goes to her bed and sleeps.
Soon as we come back in she greets us with very loud yawns.

Re: Advice - Leaving Staffy at home
My own opionion is just leave ur dog alone, i have done this with my pup from been him been 12 weeks. Me and my partner once sat at listened to him and yeah he did cry for abit but after that he was fine. They will eventually get board and find something else to do. Just make sure that you leave enough toys for him to play with.
Good luck
