No Bowl Feeding Empty No Bowl Feeding

Post by Happyfam2822 Tue Apr 21 2015, 23:34

Hey all!! I was wondering your thoughts on feeding my new pup by hand for some reward training. I would further move into putting meals into bones and toys. Thoughts on no bowl for feeding? Also anyone have some good toys they use for something similar. I know all toys can't keep up with the staffy bites!! Thank you!!

I think your no bowl idea isn't the best way forward. It separates his food from treats and your food. There is a toy called the kong wobbler which has a small hole so as the dog pushes it around small amounts come out.

I know lots of people that do feed without bowls, but never from your hand. Agree with Lynn&Pete's comment that it would be hard to differentiate. Why not feed one meal in a bowl and then one in a kong, or one raw meal so they can chew/tear meat etc.

Thank you guys for the replys!! I won't feed by hand, I did hear about lure feeding your new pup for the first couple weeks then transition to bowl and wobbler feeding. Any thoughts on the lure feeding for the first couple weeks with a transition to wobbler and bowl feeding? You guys rock for taking the time to help!!!

Handfeeding one meal a day as part of a bonding process with your dog was one of my tasks for the first week of our dog training session. I was also told to swap the bowl for a wobble kong but Gizmo hasn't properly worked out how to get food by smacking it yet so I'm part bowling til he works it out.

The only time I could see using that technique would to be to build trust or reliance. With a pup that should not be an issue.

Thank you guys for the help im taking pieces of all your comments, seemed to be the general thought no hand feeding past the couple weeks of being a puppy. I think I will do some hand feeding for the first couple weeks to help train and bond. Follow that with bowl and stuffing the wobbler for meals in the future. Thank you all!!
