new to forums
Hi my name is Sue, I have have had a rescue staffy 16 months old by the name of Bella for the last 8 weeks. She is the third staffy and the second rescue we have owned over the past 22 years. She is a gorgeous girl at home in every way. We don't think she has had any socialization and very little training apart from sit, and she is awful on the lead. Early days but any tips and hints much appreciated. Sorry but i don't seem to be able to post a picture of her

Second staffy puppy jealousy
Hello!
I’m new to the forum. We have a 3 year old blue English staffy, Biggie who is an absolute dream and very chilled out but also very social so we decided to get a second staffy puppy, Taco who is 9 weeks old (they are both males- biggie is desexed and will do Taco once he is of age)
We had been told by some not to get the same sex but me and my husband both work from home and have a very good set up at home if we need to seperate them at times as well as we are a very active family and put in a lot of training with our dogs.
Biggie has handled Taco quite well initially, but of course being a puppy he’s been very full on and super rough with biggie. (Hanging off his lip and pouncing on him) of course I stepped in and have been trying to promote calmness but now biggie seems quite scared of the puppy and is cowering and hiding from him, and also is sooking a lot. I’ve tried to give him lots of attention and tried to take him for a walk and he didn’t want to go, even tried to give him a raw bone and he refused it. Now he is terrified to be in the same room as taco!
Is he just being a sook and will eventually get used to the puppy? Besides the usual just keeping a close eye on them and giving him space from the puppy and lots of love an attention anything else I could be doing to make him feel like the puppy is not taking his place?
I’m loving this forum and the positive comments and devoted staffy owners on here. I also have 4 & 6 year old children and owning a staffy is almost harder than being a parent! But so rewarding it if you put the time and effort into consciously raising them.

Re: new to forums
Hello and welcome!
It’s a bit of a shame that you didn’t start your own new topic.
No matter
Congratulations on your new family member but oh, puppies aren’t always easy are they !
I introduced puppy Tigress when my girls were 5 and almost 4 (Opium is true superglue) so similar.
How long has Taco been in your family, at 9 weeks old I presume only a week ?
Firstly, I noticed that puppy agression and rougher play is often an indication that they are tired so definitely put the puppy to bed. Baby Tigress would sleep alot at that young age but that’s normal for a growing pup.
Does Biggie have his own corner/space where he can retreat to be away from Taco ?
My girls have their play pens and their travel crate bed (never closed) that the others are not allowed to share.
I also had special cuddle/play time with each of my girls in order to limit jealousy issues.
Biggie probably will sulk while the family dynamics settle, bless him.
I would say to offer him love and affection and all the rest, but don’t overdo it or insist as Biggie could exaggerate and play on that.
Is Biggie a very playful dog ?
Does he like toys ?
Have you tried getting the boys to interact via toys instead of Taco attacking Biggie directly ?
Everyone has told me that it’s not a good idea to have same-sex dogs in the household but so far and with very careful supervision, we’re managing here so it is possible.

Re: new to forums
Hello Nifty,
Sorry I am still learning to use the forum with posting! I also posted this on a staffy FB page and got some helpful advice there too so next post I’ll start a few thread.
Yes taco only has been with us 5 days.
We are crate training and we are really on top of putting him to bed when he’s biting or nipping (usually after an hour)
Biggie has quite a few areas he can retreat to and we also have a playpen out the back for the pup to give bully sticks or food puzzles so there is definitely a good set up to give them space but they can still be in the same area together.
Biggie is normally a playful dog and loves a good rough play. He can be a bit of a pest with other dogs with not knowing when enough is enough but hey that’s staffy’s isn’t it. but he will also be submissive in play and seems to like it. He’s actually a dream boat of a dog which is why we were so keen to get another as we have just enjoyed having a staffy so much.
Yes the only time they play well together is with a rope toy but that doesn’t last for long until taco starts trying to bite biggie’s face.
I feel confident it will all work out but I just hate seeing my older one distressed.
I might also clarify we didn’t get the second dog as company/playmate for biggie, we got him because we love having a staffy and wanted a second dog. If they become buddies wonderful but that’s not the expectation
