A hello from a new staffy owner :)

Hi there my name is Kerry and i've joined so i can be part of an online community who loves staffys just as much as i do.

My dog is called Rio, he's a 3 year old, longed legged staffy rescue dog. My other half, Adam, received a phone call from his step-dad back in October to say that he's brought a dog, that he was told about, back to Adam's mum's house from the vets because he couldn't get re-homed and they were going to put him down the next day. His step dad (a 6ft 7 soppy loud Welshman) couldn't see this happen and surprised Adam's mum with Rio that evening.

They were told that Rio had lived in a small flat with an old man all his life, never walked and never socialised. The old man couldn't cope anymore and had to go into a nursing home and give Rio up.

Unfortunately, Adam's mum appears to have an allergy to him and he's just too big and strong for her to have, especially after recent hip surgery. So they're keeping him until March when we get our new rented house and he'll be with us I've always loved staffys and pit bulls so was more than happy to have him.

About Rio: He HATES cats with a passion, he hasn't been socialised ever with other dogs, but considering that he's doing so well on his walks now after starting out with aggressively barking at any dog within 100m, to the odd whine or stare now. He LOVES his belly rubbed and licking people, he loves kids. He only knows the command sit and kiss (for treats). His favourite toy and the only one he hasn't destroyed is his kong, he adores being on the sofa for cuddles and hates baths.

My username is Seal Pig as Rio likes to keep his ears down which we think makes him look a bit like a seal, and like a lot of staffys, he snorts and scoffs like a pig sometimes, so our nick name for him is seal pig

Well done for taking Rio on & giving him his furever home, I'm sure he will give you so much affection. Sounds like you're making progress with the barking and snarling bit, the more you socialise him the better or more relaxed he sould become. When you feel more comfortable with his behaviour you might want to try some on lead walks with another friendly dog to boost his acceptance of others

Sorry to sound like a party pooper but you didn't mention if you have cleared having a dog in the rented accommodation with the landlord. Always best to get these things in writing first.
