Hi all Mia is 18 months old now and was quite submissive when younger but just lately (after her second season )
she is getting very shouty at other dogs also furs up and tail up even the beagle she has played with fine since a pup i have to watch her now as mia will pin her down and there have been some growling they used to play really well together but all Mia is interested in is showing her dominance now. the beagle is always submissive any tips to
stop this before she gets any worse we have stopped the play off lead now and walk them together and they are fine just to see if this helps any tips would be good

Not really sure what to suggest Dave. Is it aggression or is it rough play ? It can be hard to see the difference sometimes. With a dog Mia knows like the Beagle let them roll about but keep a close eye to see if it's simply rough play. You might want to just calm her down if it gets too rough and then see what happens.

As for the barking and hackles going up at dogs in the distance I think all you can do is get her to stop and focus on you. Get her to sit and then look at you and then reward. Hopefully that should be enough of a distraction and she will forget what she was doing. We use Flo's stick and just offer it to her which works every time. It could just be a phase too.

I'm sure someone with better advice will respond with something more useful.

sometimes they get more aggressive during a season. bit like a woman and menopause i guess. as ian says a favourite toy to distract her and perhaps a treat when she behaves calmly might be useful

The hackels can go up as a sign of excitement as much as anything else. if you want to get as close to the feeling as what your dog is experiancing then remember when the hairs on your arms last stood up. that is a primevil response that humans still have to fight or flight instinct. the exact same response to what happens in dogs. they may well be feeling...ohh wow im so excited, fun fun fun play play play as well as you look like an arsehole gonna make myself look big. in responce, note the hair but watch the body language as the hackels isnt the be all and end all

Good point Nath... I've Noticed that with my Flo, the hackles up doesn't always mean trouble.

The other thing to keep an eye on is your response when Mia goes tense. If you do too, and if you have tension on the lead, it will pass to her and she'll get worse because of it. If you are doing the 'look at me' or distraction method, call her to you with a treat rather than pulling.
