Interesting watch.. Would your dog protect you/your home?
http://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=hdiZqatfReA
To be honest, I believe the above video to be the case with MOST pet dogs. Even Biscuit, who kennel guarded massively and is fear aggressive towards strangers will and HAS let strangers into our home without us there, she barked yes but then ran backwards upstairs until they gave her a treat, and she literally rolled over. Personally, I think this is a positive attribute in domesticated pet dogs (how often really are you going to get burgled/attacked?!) and feel that people romanticise their dogs "protective" side far too much.
Thoughts?

I don't think you can expect much from dog that wasn't properly trained saying that my German shepherd did attack in a break . I can't see peppa that is friendly letting strangers in when I went to my op she wouldn't let me Neigbour that she likes and had the keys to pass the door. Only her dad she let in. She is very defensive and barks on every stranger enters the building and you need to be mad to test her. I wouldn't.
The video is interesting but the guy is a professional trainer and he didn't break any door or window to get in noise creates fear and different reaction altogether .

I'm not surprised at all. Nola would probably do her rubber tail wag, then lie on the floor and demand that her tummy be tickled, while Chaos would be the one barking while backing off.
We had a trainer come round to test what Bob would actually do if someone came in through the front door as he was human aggressive and had, at a foster home, bitten someone. He did bite (more like a big nip), but then run away in fear. 5 minutes later he was crawling onto the chap's lap while covering him with kisses.

I'm not sure how really threatened those dogs were though or the people they live with. Plus an untrained dog wouldn't just bite their right arm like a trained dog would. If the people had fought back maybe the dogs would have behaved differently. No way to know unless it's tried as an alternative.

Vin would just wag the tail and probably fetch a toy for said burglar

My Flo mght raise an eyebrow if she actually heard them in the house but probably wouldn't get off the sofa.
It would be different if someone came in and attacked one of the family though, she goes ape if I play fight with the boys so it wouldn't surprise me if she went nuts if it was a stranger attacking.

Suki is protective of my other half and does let strangers approaching the house know she is there. It also takes her some time to settle when we have people over and tends to bark when she doesn't know the person

It would be an interesting thing to see how they would react. Bane is very protective over noises outside but pretty sure he would just make a lot of noise.
Domino...well my mum has unpacked a car load of shopping, walking past him about 5 times while he has been asleep and he hasn't even twitched an ear

if someone made a loud noise mia would bark but once they were in the house she would probably wag her tail and head for the treat cupboard

My two would help them carry out the TV However Marley did warn off a group approaching me from behind while i tried to stop some drunk idiots kicking a guy on the ground. I suspect its was because it was a highley charged situation and he picked up on it. it did sound very agressive and i remember thinking is that really my dog!

Re: Interesting watch.. Would your dog protect you/your home?
I have no idea what would happen. Rupert is friendly to everyone, provided they come in via the main entrance. I think if someone tried to get in via a window it might be a different story.
It also depends what time it is. At night, if there's a noise outside he will growl very intensely - I've never ever heard him growl otherwise. I shouldn't think it would be a very good idea to break into our house in the middle of the night.

Re: Interesting watch.. Would your dog protect you/your home?
I would say the same thing. Stanley's usually a very docile dog but if any of us was threatened he has another side to him and makes a hell of a growl etc, it's the only time he ever does this, never aggressive to dogs etc but any threat to me in particular and he'd get in the way. We used to have a GSD and Poodle and at 6 months old the GSD would put himself between the Poodle and any threat with the obvious message of "All ya got to do now is get past me first". The other dog would back off and look for an easier target. Family is family.
