One stressed out staffie
Pixee had her booster on thursday. Now Pixee totally hates going to the vet, but I have always somehow managed to get her to walk in. Not thursday . When we arrived, she did two quick wees on the grass in a nervous state. Somehow we walked upto the door with no problems. Opened the door, pokes her head in, had a sniff, and did a turn so quick and took off nearly bringing me down with a bang
We ended up back at the car between the front of the car and a hedgerow, with Pixee shaking so badly. Gave her so much fuss and gently coaxed her back to the door, the same thing happened again. 3 times I tried. In the end a woman from reception came out with some treats to no valid. The vet then came out, by then Pixee was in a right state. I had to carry her in, lucky straight into the room as we were early too. She sat by the door pawing the door to get out, I really felt like the evil mummy doing this to her. Ever the vet said this is the worse she has been.
Took her on a nice long walk along the canal after, she picked up.
Problem now is, what on earth do I do for next time? Any advice?

Poor girl. If it's just routine things like a booster, I would suggest the vet comes out to the car.
I think your vet would be accommodating.

Re: One stressed out staffie
I would suggest not leaving such a gap between the vets and her normal routine.
If possible make it part of a walk.
pull up, walk past a few times then go back home, if you think about it the only time pets go to the vets is so something gets done to them, so no wonder they don't want to go back, but if you do it so every time she goes there its not for a jab but to walk past, even carry half her food and feed her outside or inside, the vets wont mind this.
even if its only once a week, she'll get used to it not being a bad thing.

Re: One stressed out staffie
My vets has a weigh scales and allows patients to use them anytime to check weight. Was talking to one such owner who has weighed her dog every time we've been. As you do you get chatting and she said it was to get the dog used to going in the vets without it being a bad experience as her previous one was petrified and reacted quiet in the same way as Pixee.
Might be worth trying something similar as suggested by Amelie

Try and get her used to it, have a word with reception yo see if you can try and pop in regularly so she can start to sniff about, lots of rewards and fuss too

exactly, i changed vet last year and asked if i could just bring the dogs in for a look, the receptionist gave them treats and the nurses fussed them up in the examination room. just over a month later marley reacted to a bee sting on his eye and walked straight in waggy tailed. your best bet is to try turn the place into a positive experiance. ask if you can go in with the dogs to see the nurses (might have to meet outside first) most vets are very accomodating in this sort of thing as it makes it easier for them if the dog is calm.

This is what we do too, sometimes we just pop into the vets for Rocky to say hello to the receptionists. Luckily he has always been very good at going in the vets, he just loves saying hello and getting loads of fusses from the ladies in there, he is such a tart though
Try to keep associating a visit there with all positives, loads of fusses and a treat, maybe a good play with a favourite toy afterwards.

Re: One stressed out staffie
I take Milo in to get a free weigh in about once a month - he gets fussed and sometimes even a treat. They don't mind if I sit for a while with him to meet & greet the other 'patients' if they want to. I think its a great idea. My other staffie used to be the same with the vets, & wouldn't even walk past the door without pulling my arm out

Re: One stressed out staffie
Thank you so much all. Thats a brillant idea, and I am going to do this, will have a word with the vets first and go from there. I will most likely just start outside first. Thanks again.
