Puppy doesn't like Walks
Hi All,
Does anyone's puppy not like going for a walk, Baxter will go out around midday without too much of a problem, a little hesitant but eventually he gets into it, at night or in the morning he will not go, he sits down and refuses to move . We couldn't keep our last dog in so this is all new to me !!
Thanks

Re: Puppy doesn't like Walks
Same as my pup, I take treat and/or carry her abit then put her down, I let her walk and sniff where she wants, for now and up to a certain point

Re: Puppy doesn't like Walks
Yep when Harrie was little she didn't like to walk that much it was a struggle to get her out and she would bolt home once she thought the walk was over.
She grew out of it and no problems now.
Cheers

Re: Puppy doesn't like Walks
Lula used to do it and more than a few times i ended up carrying her down the street. We tried a few things to get her moving likes treats but in the end it was just a case of her realizing she was going no matter what

I think a lot of them are a bit hesitant at first! Take treats and toys with you and make it something fun to do and he will soon learn to love it

Haha my mum has problems with her 5 year old If it's any kind of chilly outside he gets a few metres down the road and just sits down as if to say "I'm done lets go home"

Re: Puppy doesn't like Walks
Hi, I had the same problem with ruby, in the end I bought a long lead not a retractable one, its really long with a clip but they dont have a handle, I clipped her on a pretended to walk away and eventuallu she began to walk, also intising her with food sometimes helped. Hope this is helpful

Re: Puppy doesn't like Walks
Have you thought about the timing of the walks you struggle with? Before or after food? How long has he been awake before you go out? Maybe these need altering.

Re: Puppy doesn't like Walks
Does he struggle on the same routes? Could you go different ways? I think they can easily condition themselves to a 'this is what I do here/ now' problem.

Re: Puppy doesn't like Walks
We got our puppy at 9 weeks this time last year and the fog really spooked him making morning walks a no go. Same with the dark would get to the end of the drive and sit down.
A year on he barks when it's tine to go out and practically sprints out the door.
Only problem I now have is that our little one is too used to getting what he wants and refuses to walk near our house if he would prefer to get in the car to somewhere a little more exciting!
Just be patient it will get better

Re: Puppy doesn't like Walks
I think it is a puppy thing but also a bull terrier thing, in general as I have never had an EBT that didn't "do a refusal" at some point. My last dog (mini bull) when she had enough, would plonk her bum down and sit like a sack of spuds - regardless of where we were - til we took pity on her and carried her home... More than once I had to ring my husband to come with the car and 'rescue' her from a walk! When she got to about 11 or 12, we could no longer even get her off the end of our drive. Refusal every time.
Had another EBT who would refuse to turn round on a walk so all her walks had to be circuits. Or else, my brother discovered this trick where he'd picked her up in his arms, turn round in a few circles, then set her back down pointing the way he wanted to go - and she'd go.
Just took our 11 week old for her first walk tonight as she was a bit hesitant but we went out in a little pack - my husband, son and myself - so husband and I walked ahead of son with dog and having two of us in front spurred her on. Tomorrow dinner time I will try and walk her alone and bet you it will be harder without a human 'pack'!
I was just saying to my son tonight that we have never had a pup that seemed to 'enjoy' its first walk. But they soon get into it.
