BAD NEWS
First topic message reminder :
I haven't been on here for a while as something terrible has happened. While out for a walk a few weeks ago a dog off lead growled and showed his teeth at Mia in an aggressive way. Mia went for the dog and a fight broke out which lasted about 10 secs. The other dog had a cut ear and had to have 18 stitches. Mia was unhurt. Anyway I did the responsible thing and gave the owner my name, address and phone number. I said I would pay for the vets bill even though his dog started it.
I suppose that wasn't good enough and he reported me to the police. On sept 1st (which was my birthday) a PC came to the house and seized Mia. Took her off to kennels to assess her.
Apparently she shows a lot of characteristics of a pit bull type.
I have to go to court on Wed 17th to try and get her back.
As you can imagine it has been a very stressful and upsetting time for all concerned. Mia has been well behaved at the kennels and shown no sign of aggression to either staff or the other dogs.
It is going to be recommended to the court that Mia be returned home as she is not a danger to public safety, but she will have to wear a muzzle and on lead in public and pay defra to go on the exempted dog register.
It is down to the court whether she be returned or destroyed.
People's thoughts and opinions would be appreciated.
Thanks.

The law is an ass. The report says Mia isn't a danger in public yet they impose a muzzle and lead rule, where is the common sense

I'm sure you're just overjoyed - brilliant news. But maybe later when things have settled down, you might look into an appeal - this must be possible and there seems to be no logic at all to what's happened. For now though - wonderful and bet you can't wait til Monday.

Good news glad you got her back.
This just goes to show the law is an ass, she is deemed not aggressive but they impose a lead on you then have no length restrictions on it just a few contradictions there.

Re: BAD NEWS
Would recommend the Giant Flexi XL. 10m version - best for maximum roaming potential. Tape looks like it's the stuff that car seat belts are made of, inspires confidence.

Brilliant news, is she deemed type and got to be tattooed/insured etc or is it just the muzzle and lead?
If just the latter shame it had to be dealt with this way
The main thing is Mia is coming home

Yes she is classed as pit bull type so has to be tattooed, third party insurance, put on the ED register. Microchipped, neutered.
Can anyone recommend how to muzzle train Mia so she doesn't get stressed?

I'm starting to wonder what ISN'T classed as a pit bull type now.. There's a link in the training/behaviour section about muzzle training hun! Really sorry you've had to go through all of this. Shame on the other owners!! Glad your girly is coming back to you.

Re: BAD NEWS
To get a muzzle, we went to the Pets at Home store and I asked for advice on fitting. Their man spent a while with me while we selected the right size and tried it on Douglas, ensuring straps the right length, comfortable fit, able to pant, to take treats etc. It can be useful to see someone else fitting it.
Now if I get out the muzzle, its appearance is positively associated with treats. First time of wear, he didnt understand what it was and would sometimes wipe the side of his head along the ground, presumably trying to get it off. This was only for a few seconds, I couldnt say he was stressed. He swiftly got on ok with it and it certainly doesnt stop him sniffing and snuffling about. For me, when he needs it, it can give peace of mind as I know no bad thing can happen to him.

Re: BAD NEWS
I have a Baskerville (basket style) muzzle for Ledger (got after a really nasty experience with an old vet winding him up trying to put a muzzle on)
We are still building up but to desensitize make it a fun thing I initially spread the inside with peanut butter, cream cheese or marmite so he is being treated by putting it on. Then extending the time it's on for lots of praise while calm and treat through the muzzle (high level meat/cheese treats) remove then more fuss but I only treat when he has it on
Ledger really doesn't like it from the vet experience but just went for it and took a short walk around the park on a short lead so he couldn't try and take it off (if he gets the chance he sits on his hind legs like a squirrel puts his front paws to the muzzle and tries to pull it off) tbh once outside and the sniffs are there he was distracted and forgot about it quite quickly
I'm going to keep trying it there are a few lurchers around the park wearing them purely to stop them eating stuff that's left on the floor and catching cats and rats.

Extract from Dogs Trust information: Pit Bull Terrier Type Dogs
To find out more about other Dogs Trust fact sheets
visit www.dogstrust.org.uk/az/factsheetsanddownloads
or email campaigns@dogstrust.org.uk
Reg. Charity Numbers: 227523 and SC037843
Insurance:
You must obtain third party liability insurance for your dog. Do not leave it to the last
minute otherwise you may find that you are too late to get it organised before
the deadline. The only broker that can arrange this is Brooks Braithwaite and they
can be reached on 01444 412 118 or enquiries@brooksbraithwaite.com.
Alternatively if you become a member of Dogs Trust, amongst other benefits, you get
third party liability insurance – however, Dogs Trust is not an insurer nor do we
specifically sell insurance. Dogs Trust can be reached on 0207 837 0006 or
customer.services@dogstrust.org.uk. You will need to send the Index of Exempted
Dogs a copy of your membership letter, which they accept as proof of insurance.
N.B. terms and conditions apply to insurance and you must check with your chosen
provider what terms are applicable.
Hope this helps
