ROUGH PLAY
Hi
I am new to this forum and would be grateful for any advice anyone can offer me.
My name is Lauren and I live with my husband, 2 children and 6 and 8 and 2 fur babies.
We have had staffies for almost 11 years and my life wouldnt be the same without one!! lol
My babies are Sky (4yrs) and Ernie (8months)
They are really godd together - most of the time but recently play has gotten really rough! To the point where Sky had drawn blood and Ernie has cuts and scabs around his ears and neck!
Dont get me wrong he can give as good as he gets!
He is still in a crate if I leave them during the day at the moment (they sleep together at night) as I am wary to leave them together for too long in case it gets too rough or too out of hand.
I'm sure its all harmless fun but drawing blood is a bit too far. Also the noise they make can be terrible, I am aware that this is normal staffy play but was wondering when should I step in or intervene??
Thanks in advance
x

Welcome to the forum from the kids and I
Do you intervene when play gets rough and give them a bit of time out from one another?

Re: ROUGH PLAY
I do when the noise gets too much on the garden (the neighbours must think they're killing each other) or if it seems all one sided... x

Re: ROUGH PLAY
Hi and welcome to the forum from Rocky and me
Sounds like it may be getting a little out of hand, one thing to try is putting some stones in a plastic bottle and give it a shake to distract them, just to let them know it is not acceptable.

Re: ROUGH PLAY
Hi and welcome from me and my two
Well rough play is just that, and they will get cuts and bruises. we may initialy think eww its getting out of hand but if one has enough they will soon tell the other. usually its a high pitched shrill noise or if its really bad a warning snarl pulling the lips back to expose the teeth and snapping.
noise only means they are enjoing themselves, this is my two in what i would concider mild play,
they get alot worse than that, and just for a comparison think about how some people like playing rugby, boxing, karate etc etc. all likeley to give you bumps lumps cuts and grazes. all contact sports, and dogs just love contact sport as much if not more than we do
