I have a question...
So i got my Staffy son about 3 1/2 yrs. ago. I will be the first to admit that i did not socialize him very much actually clearly not enough. Is it too late now to do so? Plus in the near future i would like to get him a friend, one of his own kind. There are very few and far between of his breed where i live. But i need advice and suggestions on how to introduce another dog, let alone a puppy to our no kids, one dog family. I already know that the new puppy has to be a female. But after that i need help!
Thank you - : )

Re: I have a question...
Welcome to the forum. I dont know if its too late as such i would certainly try and socialise the dog with an older calmer dog doesnt have to necessarily have to be the same breed . Slowly but surely is the key. Look online for some tips but someone here should be able to help.

Hi and welcome to the forum from Rocky and me
It's very too late to socialise a dog, we got Rocky when he was 9 months old and hadn't been socialised. It has been hard work but we are getting there now ( three years on)

Re: I have a question...
Ive had mia since 3 the only time she was a bigger dog was to have pups . I slowly had to introduce her to small dogs and tried with big dogs realised it wasnt meant to be. Shes not a vicious dog just she had bad owners as a puppy.

Re: I have a question...
this is what I would do.....keep an eye on the local park or recreational area on where people walk they're dogs...normally you'll see the same bunch of people you know the type always walking their dogs together...now approach these same people with out you're dog and explain the situation ..forewarn them if you like..and ask if they don't mind helping you out on socialising your dog...the chance's are they'll probably say yes if they say no..you've lost nothing and look else where..but if and when you meet up with them or others in the park..keep you're dog on a short lead and stay at a distance at first ..observe ...once your dog is calm slowly approach the group..praise lots of good behaviour..and frown on bad...I'm not going to say that it will be easy...but perseverance and patience is the key...has he been castrated ..?..if not and you're not going to stud him...it might help..good luck

Re: I have a question...
Welcome from me and Axl
I agree, it's never too late to socialise your dog. I wouldn't go to the park though if I were you. You don't know what other people's dogs are like. Even if they say they are good/well behaved they may not be and if your dog meets the wrong kind of dog it could make things worse for him, increase his fear.
I would recommend taking him to training classes, even if your dog is very well behaved/trained still take him. It's great socilisation in a controlled area with people that are experts in behaviour. Make sure you find a trainer that you trust first by going to different classes and sitting in on a lesson. Once you've found a good trainer who you trust can help then take your dog along. Explain to the trainer beforehand that your dog has issues with other dogs and they will take it from there. You will find the trainer may ask you to bring your dog to observe at first and then gradually ease him in. I did the same with Axl and it helped so much
