Max is home but squeals like a pig.
I have finally got Max home. God he is amazing. I have put him in his crate (4 ft x 3ft x3ft). It is equipped with a very comfy bed, water bowl, toys and a litter box as time to go to bed and as soon as I left him to go up to bed he started squealing like a pig and howling like a wolf. Hope this doesnt go on for too long. He is only 8 weeks old and it is his first night here. Am putting it down to being here for the first night and him not used to being here. Can anyone shed some light. I am not going to go down to him as I feel he needs to get into the routine of sleeping in his crate. Had seriousfun with him today.

Me too, welcome to the joys of puppyhood
Was he sleeping with the rest of his litter until you brought him home? It's a big adjustment, but he'll get there (probably not on the first night or two).
I've never crated mine but they both were in their beds in the laundry and wailed for a few nights. Hang in there.

Awww, I still remember when Roxy was that young although she was great at night since the day we brought her home (sorry, not trying to rub salt into the wound ) I went to the "op-shop" and bought a couple of snuggly teddies that she could cuddle up to as a replacement for her litter-mates. She's now 6 months and still has her floppy-bunny from "early" puppyhood that she sleeps with each night (it gets chucked in the washing machine too when I wash her bedding)
It sounds like you are doing the right thing by not going back in the room and trying to comfort, as this would (in my opinion) teach Max that the more he cries, the more attention he will get.
Early days yet, he's a baby and it is only normal for him to cry without the comfort of Mum and siblings.

oh he is adorable, lovely colour. its probably a bit late now but luckily the people i got Woody from live local so about a week before i was picking him up i took his blanket round to their house for them to put in with mum to get her scent, i then put that in woodys crate when i got him home - i put his crate in the living room the first night and slept on the sofa next to him so he could see me. he cried a little but not too much and that was it 2nd night i got up about 4am to let him out and he didnt cry again. i dont know if the blanket worked or not but i think i had an easy time of it!

Winston howled and cried the first few nights too... it was amazing just how loud he was!! I got a few soft toys and rubbed them over his mum and dad when we picked him up.. he is nearly 12 weeks and still curls up with them every night. But he doesn't howl or cry anymore.. so hang in there. The first few nights are the worse! Yes as Lisa said you must ignore them ...even though I know it is hard!! Give little Max a cuddle for me!!

aawww I remember those days
But i must admit I did give in the first night, naughty i know but I couldnt stand him crying, so i slept on the sofa but the second night we gave him my old t-shirt that i had been wearing that day on purpose so he could smell me, a teddy and we put the radio on low enough for him to hear and i slept upstairs and have done since
Max will be alright , just dont give in like i did, try the teddy bear it worked for bruno : )

max is so cute you must be so excited. billy cried for a few nights, gave him a toy that he had from his mother and an old t-shirt that my son had worn and put them in the cage, it lasted a few nights but then it stopped.
good luck

Thanku so much for the texts people. I ended up putting my sons mattress down so I could get back to sleep. Right now I have my daughters old stuffed panda up my shirt trying to get my smell on it. Feel like an old doofus

He was a bit better last night. He howled for a bit at 2 and at 5. I think i put him in his crate a bit early last night. (about 8.30). Gonna put him in at 11 when off to bed. I put the radio on for him, gave him one of my daughters old teddys and then also put in an old sweaty top of mine so that he has my smell. What do u guys reckon?

I think it will only get better from now on
My oldest had her 5 month old bull mastiff bro for the first few nights and she was great, but after he went back out bush she cried and it broke my heart. I sometimes think it was worse when she stopped coz then I started thinking something was wrong and really wanted to go and check her

I know how you feel. My old staffy Jethro was waking up every night around 2am with panic attacks.. puffing and panting and pacing.. ( he sleeps in our bedroom! ) It was driving us bonkers... thank goodness now he is sleeping through the night.. and then we go and get a puppy !! What were we thinking?? !!!
