Best Bones ?
Hi - I'm starting my Staffy pup on a RAW diet and I've heard that ONLY chicken (and Lamb ?) bones should be give to your Stafford - is this correct ? If so , why is this ?
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Best Bones ?
The only bones you shouldn't give are large weight bearing bones from big animals like cows/pigs, everything else should be fine the reason is that those bones are denser than dogs teeth so can break them

Agree with Saz! Although see what your dog can handle. Bane loves chicken and fish with the bones and also pigs trotters with the bones, but we find he struggles with ribs?

Argghh - I've just bought home a huge knuckle bone for milo from the butchers who said it'd be fine and which he loves - do I need to throw it away?

Re: Best Bones ?
GONE - better safe than sorry. It's great that I have you people to turn to for advice. I should've asked before going to the market lol.
Anyways just got back from great walkie and went to pop chicken in oven - thought - mmm a nice little chicken wing - let's try it on Milo boy. He loved it. His little eyes lit up as if he'd been eating them all his life! I held on to it so he would have to crunch it and chew it first the down it went. He's fine absolutely loved it he did.

I was a bit nervous too freya - thats why I held on to it - but Milo was fine. He just crunched and swallowed it all done - no coughing or choking - nothing.

Re: Best Bones ?
Can have the whole chicken apparently - but yes I gave him the whole wing. It's very satisfying to watch cos they enjoy it so much - and don't worry just hold it for a bit so that he gets the hang of not trying to wolf it down

Re: Best Bones ?
hi all, at what age can a staffy have his first bone, and sorry for my ignorance but just say i cook drumsticks and i have one left over can that be given? i though giving bones would harm them if the bones splinter, if you know what i mean

Re: Best Bones ?
Bones should never be given cooked only raw. As when they are cooked they become brittle

Re: Best Bones ?
You'll have to bare with me as I am new to raw myself, yes they can only be raw with the meat on, stuff like chicken wings duck necks, chicken carcass, avoid big bones like knuckles from a cow etc,
My boy is 5 months old nearlt 6 and on raw, it's up to you what you want to do kibble wise but I think the general consensus is that they digest kibble and raw differently so might give her a funny tummy

Re: Best Bones ?
i was only thinking of giving her bones evey now and them like as a big treat, or after a long day at the park if you know what i mean, im giving her dry food mixed with a little wet, she is 9 weeks old so i am all new to this, i think a raw diet would probably consist of more work in the kitchen.....i'm guessing, i was intending to give her raw food on the weekends but not sure if that is advisable as i think it is better that she sticks to one diet and not mixing both, what would a normal raw diet consist of? also i think i will change her diet to raw when she gets a bit older as i will be feeding her less so when i start to feed her once a day that would be better for me i think, what would be a typical raw diet for a week and once a day feeding?
