Insurance for adopted Staffy
Hi all!
I am new to the forum so hopefully I am doing this right!
I have adopted a 5 year old staffy in the last week from the RSPCA. Within a few hours of getting her home I had noticed she skipped on her back left leg when running, so I took her to my own vet to be examined.
Although nothing was found on examination the vet thinks it could be a sign of a luxating patella and told me to monitor it for a month. I was so worried I also took her back to the RSPCA to be looked at but they couldn't find anything apart from a slight clicking in the knee joint on examination. Again, they advised to monitor it.
We have been given 6 weeks free insurance with morethan which was activated before the both trips to the vets.
I want to upgrade our cover to the best one available but could anyone advise how I approach this issue with the dog's leg. The condition hasn't been definitely diagnosed or treated and when we adopted her from the RSPCA it is not noted on her records. However, my own vet has mentioned it and the RSPCA have noted this in our recent visit.
Any advice would be very gratefully received as insurance just seems to be minefield!!

Re: Insurance for adopted Staffy
Hi, that is a tricky one.
We have Rocky insured with More Than but have not had to make a claim so far with them. I'm almost certain that most insurance companies will not pay out for a pre exsisting condition.
It may be an idea to speak to the rescue centre she came from to ask if they would cover the cost of any operation needed on the knee or at least partly help with the costs of it. Sorry cannot be any further help.
We do have a section for insurance which may help:

Re: Insurance for adopted Staffy
Thanks both for the advice
The RSPCA have offered to cover the cost of operating but only if it was required in the next few months so I think we'll just have to keep an eye on her and definitely read the small print when we take out the full insurance! Fingers crossed they will cover it!

Insurances are a law to themselves. Always read the small print. Kathy is correct in saying they dont/wont treat pre conditions. good luck with the leg.
