First time staffie owner.
Hi my name is Amie, on friday we are, hopefully if she likes us, bringing home our first little girl staffie. She is an aprox. 8 month old currently called Rosie. She is a rescue dog that was found drowning in a river, and is currently in a foster home. My 3 children and I are very excited and keen to be good, responsible owners. One question I have is what are ppls opinions on name changes?? My sister in law is Rosie and its going to get confusing. Is she to old to change, should the name sound similar and does anyone have any suggestions. Thanku and loving this site. Any advice/tips would be gratefully recieved xxx

Welcome from Darcy and me
With regards to changing her name I know some on here have changed names, it's not something I've done personally so hopefully they'll be able to offer you some advice but I can't see there being a problem

Re: First time staffie owner.
I wouldn't have thought it would be too much of a problem seeing as she is only 8 months old. If I were going to change a dog's name, I would make it short and keep getting her attention when you call her, I should imagine she'll soon associate her new name with you talking to her. there's only one way to find out and that's to give it a try. Maybe someone that has actually done this may come along and be able to give more advice

Hi & Welcome from Flo and me
Well done on the rescue. We changed Flo's name and mainly call her Oi when she starts nibbling her paws. She's also deaf so it doesn't really matter what we call her
I'm sure changing names won't be a problem at all.

Re: First time staffie owner.
Welcome from me and Alfie.
She may only have been given that name since being found anyway. Also a lot of people have rescue dogs that were found as strays so no previous names known. She is young and if you only ever call her by your chosen name from the start she will soon learn it

Re: First time staffie owner.
We did the name change with our rescue who was a year old(Chug not staffie though). The history was unclear on whether or not he was on owner turn over. We did go with something that sounded similar and he started responding after a few weeks. He just did not look like a "Brownie" to us. Enjoy your rescue, best decision we ever made!

Re: First time staffie owner.
Hi and welcome to the forum from me and the zoo xx
I changed my staffy's name when I rehomed him. He was called Chico (pmsl makes me laugh everytime I think of the poor bugger being called that). He's now called Knox (short for Knoxville and probably not much better than Chico in most peoples eyes lol)
We had no issues and I think at 8 months old you shouldn't have an issue, just make sure you use it a lot when praising and generally talking/singing to your staff xx

Re: First time staffie owner.
A change of name should be no problem. I think names with 2 syllables are better and don't sound as harsh. Our last dog was Floyd and we would lengthen it to Floy oyd. When you choose her name train her by saying it and when she looks at you praise and treat. A name is not a name to a dog, it's a unique attention grabber so in a way it's as if you're teaching a new command.
You and you're family are going to love your life from now on!!!

Re: First time staffie owner.
Hi and welcome to the forum from Rocky and me
Rocky is also a rescue dog but we kept his name (he was 9 months old when we adopted him from Wood Green) as we thought he had already been through enough changes to deal with.
Maybe the name Maisy or Daisy as these are not too different to Rosie.

Re: First time staffie owner.
had a rescue dog a few years back..half yorkie/jack Russell...I was only suppose to look after her for a couple of weeks...yeah right..had her for years...lol....any way her name was when I first got her..sophie...well I'm a big bloke...couldn't picture myself calling her by that...in a middle of a field..."come on sophie.....sophie..come"...er that wasn't going to happen and I think I might of received some unwanted attention...so changed her name to scamp...as she was a right little scamp into all sorts..any way...she took to the name more or less straightaway ..I think its all down to the tone and the way you talk to the dog and just see what sort of response you get...I'm new as well...so hello

Her bloke is a burly fella, so naturally, I took the mick
