Jumping
Our 8 month old Staffy/English Bulldog mix has a HUGE problem with jumping. He thinks he's a 15 lb lap dog like his big brother, rather than the 100 lb beast that he is and jumps on everyone and everything. You cannot walk in the door or through the baby gate into the kitchen without getting attacked by him. Not attacked in a bad way, lol, he's just so excited to see you, even if it was 2 seconds ago that you left the room, and it's not just one time. It's 3, 4, 5 times that he jumps up on you. He has SO MUCH ENERGY and just tears around the house jumping all over the furniture and the kids if we let him out of the kitchen. Our 2 mile a day walks help for about 20-30 minutes while he recovers, then he's right back to jumping and knocking them over. Suggestions on the best way to teach him not to do this because right now he's hurting the kids because of how big he is even though he doesn't mean to.

Re: Jumping
Great link above. What do you do when he jumps up?

Re: Jumping
I have tried "no" and "down" in a loud, stern voice, hands in front of me to block him. I have a knee to the chest to knock him down and try to keep him from being able to jump on me, I have tried turning my back to him. We grab his harness and tell him "no" and "down" when he jumps on the kids, but he weighs twice what they do and stands taller than them on his hind legs.

Re: Jumping
He may need more walks and play time to tire him out more. you could also try training him to sit, stay, paw etc

Re: Jumping
I figured that might be part of it. Finding time is another story. It's not in the cards right now for a back yard but I really want to get him one because I know part of it is needing to get out energy, but he still needs to work on behaving.

Re: Jumping
Yes 1 walk a day is not enough, especially if he doesn't have access outside at home to run around in?

Re: Jumping
No means no. And if he still jumps up, put him on the naughty step - i.e. into another room on his own for five minutes to "think about what he's done".
They hate being ignored.
I have this problem too with my own dog. It's boring but you have to be consistent. I find it difficult as lots of people in my neighbourhood know and love him and love him jumping up as they love being recognised and greeted so affectionately.

Re: Jumping
Try putting a flat hand out in front of you so that when Axel jumps up he gets a nose full of palm. It ain't comfortable for him and the harder he jumps at you the harder correction. Remember and just use your hand to block and not punch obviously.
