Sudden large hives or nodules under dog's skin
Hello
Two days ago I noticed a bump, the size and shape of a small pea, on Rupert's side. Yesterday evening there were about seven of them, all over his body (not on his tummy or face) mainly on his trunk and thighs. They are now the size of large peas.
I took him to the vet today and she said it was peculiar. She said it was probably an allergic reaction to insect bites. The bumps had gone a bit scabby at the top and for this reason she gave him a course of antibiotics plus a steroid injection and intihistemine. She said that she was worried they were about to get infected. She is not the kind of vet to give unnecessary treatment and usually holds off if unsure.
Has anyone else had this happen to their dog?
I would really appreciate any thoughts. He has not been anywhere unusual and I've had him for two years. Just in the park every day. He does roll about in the grass a lot and considering that the bumps are on his back mainly, I think possibly he might have rolled on something or some things in the long grass.
They don't seem to be bothering him but he is not a high-maintenance dog. He was very hyper last night and possibly it was because of irritation?
Thanks for all your feedback.

It certainly sounds like an allergic reaction to something he has rubbed in or been bitten by. I'm sure if he is itchy he will feel agitated. I hope his meds work soon x

Are you able to post a picture of what these bumps look like ?
Does sound like an allergic reaction though so the antihistamine should kick in fairly quickly.

Re: Sudden large hives or nodules under dog's skin
Hello again - it doesn't really show up in pictures as he is brindle but, yes, it does feel exactly like your picture, inez Maria.
I then looked up dogs allergies and found similar stories - either a bite from something like a bee that has caused reaction or else a food allergy. I am trying to remember exactly what he ate on the weekend but I doubt it was anything out of ordinary - he's on raw.
So I think possibly an insect bite but I don't know which one.

3 of my dogo argentinos used to get something very similar. Chicken/egg would cause that reaction as well as shampooing (even with hypo allergenic shampoo) but with my boy below this was a couple of days after coming back from the boarding kennel and they had given him a bath. They never bothered our boys that got these and it was always over their backs and legs.
In regards to the chicken/egg allergy - they were fine with it in the beginning but one day just became allergic.

Re: Sudden large hives or nodules under dog's skin
Hope he is doing okay and it sounds like an allergic reaction to me as well. The meds should help. Suki had bad food allergies and before we got her tested we tried keeping a diary of what she ate and where she was to see if we could isolate the issue. That may help as well and remember they can develop allegies as they age and they are subject to change as well so what was fine before could be the cause of the problem

Re: Sudden large hives or nodules under dog's skin
The bumps are now scabbing over which I think is a good sign. I am going back to the bet tomorrow for an update. To me it seems insect related, a bit like when you are bitten all over by a mosquito, have an allergic reaction and then scratch the bites.
Are there any insects that any of you have noticed that are suddenly more prevalent?

Hives have gone down and scabbed up. Scabs falling off. I am relieved.
But if anyoune else has experienced similar with their dog I would be v interested to hear what you thought caused it.
My vet said she had not seen it before.
