3 months old, 4 weeks in, a progress report for Theia *pics*
Hi all,
We have found posts about pups of a similar age to Theia very useful, when looking at training, development, behaviour etc, so thought we would do a progress report for her!
The crate has been a revelation!! She loves it, and will happily wander in when she has had enough! She has always slept right throught the night in there, and rather than it being a cage, its her safe and comfy place. Tho sometimes I wonder just how comfy...
The toilet training has been great. Theia goes to the door when she wants to be out, does her thing, then usually comes straight back in. She has never had a poo indoors, and now only has the occasional excited dribble!
Theia is picking up the basic commands really well. She is mastering sit, down, wait, nicely (when taking treats). However, our biggest surprise is when out walking. She walks at our side the majority of the time, but when we drop the lead she doesn't stray far ahead, will wait when told, and comes back when called! In fact, the recall is brilliant, she runs towards is like she hasn't seen us for days!!
When she starts getting bored or tired, she bites shoes and trouser bottoms, I was picking her up, but I now slow down, or stop completely, let her have a minute, then carry on. Seems to work! In fact, she is generally still very mouthy, and managed to tear her canine tooth through my thumb end only this afternoon!! Time out seems to calm her down, and she is worse when she is tired!!
She isn't snarling here, her lip was curled up and stuck to her dry gums!!
Theia is a good eater, and eats her dampened JW fish and rice without problems. We have avoided giving her any human food, with the result being she doesn't know what she is missing, so doesn't give the puppy eyes for scraps! She has a sniff, is told no, and wanders away. Hoping to keep this up!!
Theia is very friendly with other dogs, too much so sometimes! She attended her first socialization class yesterday, which was hilarious! She took a particular liking to an Italian Spinone, or rather, his ears, which were at a perfect height to grab!! She had a couple of time outs when she got a bit over the top. She may be a natural at agility, she ran through the tunnel without being asked!
We have met a variety of dogs whilst out and about, and for the most part, she has done well.
Theia so far is a happy little girl, who learns quite fast, and is fun to be around. We just have to be patient and consistent, and remember, she is still only a baby!!

Thanks for the comments! We are fortunate that there is just myself and Peter at home, no kids, so we can spend a lot of time training and playing. We have become a tag team, one entertaining Theia while the other is busy, then swap!! Looking forward to a great summer!

So pleased to read it's all going so well for you. A crate can be such a good idea for the dog to use as their safe haven.

Loved the update and how you've written it - sounds like a school report and the pics are just adorable. That sleeping one in the crate made me laugh as Marquez and our last boy would also get into some very uncomfortable sleeping positions in there too
I especially love this as we haven't gone through the staffy puppy stage as we got our boy when he was 14 months old, so its nice to see posts like this

Wow, she is a beautiful little girl and you are obviously a great job with her training. If only all dog owners would put in the time and effort you have with their dogs. They would soon see the benefits of a well trained and well socialise dog. Great job and a great progress report.
