Bad Skin
Hey Guys,
Just wondering if its normal for staffies to get poor skin and hair problems? my poppy has been having issues with her fur, she keeps getting thinning sections and a rash under her belly. i have changed her food and started using medicated shampoo, but was wondering why this was happening and how to prevent it fully?
really worried about her, i know its not fleas or anything, just wondering if she is just super sensitive?

Re: Bad Skin
Has she been scratching a lot? I would take her to the vet. She could be suffering from Demodetic Mange. This is caused by a small mite that causes itching. This causes the dog to scratch and bleed and also hair loss. What they will do is take a skin scraping from an affected area and examine it under a microscope. If it is demodex, they will supply a medicated shampoo to bathe her in and maybe some tablets too. You could also give her some sunflower oil in her food as Staffy pups are prone to having dry flaky skin and this will help her coat too. If I were you, I wouldn't wash her with the medicated shampoo as she may be allergic to this. First step I would take is to rule out the demodex mite.

Re: Bad Skin
It could also be dermatitis (I think it's called atopic dermatitis). I've known of Staffies be allergic to pollen. Again you would be best off visiting the vets. They may advize a steroid injection or anti histamines. Hope these suggestions help. Both are quite common in this breed when they are young, but when their immune system builds up, they will be OK.
