Re: cancer debate
Nope. Cancer is not a singular thing, it comes in many forms.
They have and will continue to find effective treatments for all types but are a long way off from finding that magic bullet unfortunately.

yes of course they differnet cancers they just need ot change that drug a little bit for htat type of cancer
Re: cancer debate
But surely though in many forms theres bound to be a common cause of what sets it off or causes it?-Ian- wrote:Nope. Cancer is not a singular thing, it comes in many forms.

I quoted both cos it'll be the same answer really.
Cancer is a cell that has been damaged and continues to grow abnormally. Some are aggressive and some are not as we know, it really depends on what or where that damage first occurred. There are many assumed triggers like Asbestos and as often quoted, smoking.
What causes the damage is not entirely clear or more specifically why the body cannot deal with this damage as it can with other injuries. A generic drug is a concept that you would think could work but consider the Influenza bug, this mutates and changes with each outbreak. So you could have a generic base drug but it would need to be altered so dramatically to treat each different cancer that in the end it wouldn't be that similar to the original if that makes sense.

Phew
Not that clever really, just a subject that I've been involved with for about 26 years now so some of it must have stuck

Re: cancer debate
we have a lot greedy people in this world... if thye can seel an super drug for 10,000 for trentment why would they realease some that cost 1/4 of that
Re: cancer debate
Steve wrote:did you see bbc news where they can program a good cell to block cancer cells?
I didn't see it but this is the type of thing my eldest is studying at Uni. The way that they can manipulate cells is awe inspiring these days.

New drug cost millions if not billions to develop and test. A drugs company will want to recoup their investment, quiet rightly I guess. Normally there is a time limit on the license for that drug though and what tends to happen at the end of the license is that other companies reverse engineer the drug and produce the same thing but without developing it and therefore an awful lot cheaper.
Now I sound like a know-it-all

Re: cancer debate
well first question, I think if they had a cure it would be out. they stand to make far far much more money with a cure than without. As Ian said it is a very costley process developing any drug. One of our clients nearly went bust two years ago when a heavily funded project failed at the very last hurdle.
Secondly Chinese hackers, we see 70% of the traffic hitting our firwalls from chinese IP's. now this doesnt mean 70% of the worlds hackers are Chinese, no it means that there are a hell of alot of infected machines in china fueling botnets. most of the OS software is hookey, cant be updated with security patches and AV isnt even conciderd hence the sheer volume of infected machines.
Now more worringly, state sponserd stuff. one example thats begining to worry more people in security. alot of routers, switches etc are made in china, these all have firmware, some of which is encrypted. whats to say this hasnt been modified to sit and watch all of the traffic on your network sniffing out passwords etc. clever stuff, you spend all that cash on perimiter protection to keep people out and then unwittingly plug in a listening device right into the middle of your network.
