I have discovered that staffies DO NOT FLOAT in the pool
Well at least Marquez doesn't! He decided to go in without us and he sank to the bottom like a dead weight and just stood there until the hubby went to the rescue Shane said that he was just standing there looking around!!!! Think the poor boy was in shock. We made sure he kept on the lifejacket after that but he still managed to fall into the pool another 2 times I think it's time for some doggy swimming lessons and a proper doggy swimming jacket. Shane's already said that a fence will be going around the new pool at home in Spain too because it will be dangerous if he falls in without anyone watching him.

Re: I have discovered that staffies DO NOT FLOAT in the pool
Well after watching him just sink like that, swimming lessons are a must now especially as we have a pool at home in Spain. Not sure WHAT he was thinking when he first went in and just stood there on the bottom of the pool! Actually feel laughing at him now knowing that he was totally clueless on what to do and could've drowned. I don't think it was traumatic for him though as he didn't keep his distance after falling in so he is either not the smartest dog or he just really loves the water. I've found a couple of places close by that have doggy swimming so will take him on friday when our daughter has the day off school and see how he goes. Using a proper dog jacket will also be more comfortable for him too.
Really love the look of this one so if the place that he's going to doesn't have them for sale there (they do have them for the dogs swimming) I'll order him this one unless someone has a better recommendation.

Aw bless, Ledger had one swimming lesson last summer and they were happy for me to get in the pool but we kept him in the suspended harness and they played with the current to get him using his legs to come towards me.
Turns out it was invaluable he also turned on his side and just flailed at first but seemed to get the hang by the end of the session but a few months later when he slipped into the canal he was able to stay afloat and at the side enough that I could get to him to pull him up the high bank

Hearing this makes our decision to give him lessons the right thing. We just assume that dogs naturally know how to swim but just seeing him sink to the bottom and just stand there like an idiot makes us realise how dangerous it could've been. It's like he thought he would just do what he does in the small kiddies pool and it will be ok
We're getting the pool redone at our home and it's going to be really deep so in the event he does get through the safety fence and falls into the deep end, we just want to make sure that he can swim up to the shallow end and the steps to get out.
