Toots update

It turns out Toots has a broken bone in her leg.
Devastated and gutted. She goes in Monday for an op to pin it.
2 months of crate rest.
Arghhhh, just getting there nicely with her training and socialisation.
Going to be hard keeping her quiet. Got some interactive toys on order and there are good tips online on how to play games with them without them moving.
So sad for her, but hope in two months she'll be fully healed and back to her old self.
All this for an accidental slip off the sofa when took my eye off her for 30 seconds!    

Omg you must be beside yourself! Poor toots, hope everything goes well Monday and we're here if you need us

Bugger! Resting won't be easy - but can be done. I had to do it to Moo before we found she arthritis as she had a limp and I didn't want her under anesthetic for x-rays (bit the bullet after about 6 weeks).

Really sorry to read this but it will heal and you will get back to normal. Wishing Toots all the best for the op Xx

Just left my baby girl at the vets.
Was hard not to cry.
Put on a brave face, then cried when I got back in the car.
They are keeping her overnight.
She went in all waggy and smiley, I felt such a terrible traitor   

Easy to say I know but don't be too hard on yourself. It has to be done for Toots own good and I am sure that she will be wagging that tail and so very pleased to see you when you collect her.

I have always hated leaving Flo and am miserable until I get her home.
Do keep us up to date with her progress Annie.

The op went well, the vet just phoned, she's awake but drowsy still.
I will have her home tomorrow, armed with sedatives (I could do with some!) as she must be kept calm and reasonably still.
Hopefully in 6 weeks they will be able to remove the pins, then it's physio and swimming and a sound Toots!
Missing her terribly, but it's for the best she stays there overnight so they can watch her.
She has a massive duvet waiting in her crate and some tasty chicken.
Feel a bit better now its all over. Now the recovery starts.

Ahhh Annie, as strange as this sounds now is a good time of year to heal after an operation, it may take a bit longer in the wintertime and she wouldn't have the lovely warm sunshine either.

I'm sure she will be fine when she comes home with all your TLC.

My girl is home.
She has a huge bandage on her leg.
So far she's being brilliant. Have to keep her in her crate most of the time.
My vet showed me the post op x-rays and it looks a really neat job.
So with loads of cuddles, chicken and new toys, we now are on the road to the six weeks or so recovery.
Won't be easy I know.

Got through the first night. I slept next to her crate with my head practically in it!
I think she had a far more comfortable night than me

Toots seems to be progressing well.....doing better than I am!
Two nights now of sleeping by her crate. Keep waking up and each time I do, she's flat out fast asleep.
Think I'll chance going to bed tonight.
Have to carry her into the garden where she has to wear a special 'wellie' over the bandage. She hates it lol, but have to keep the dressing clean.
She is having sedatives, which I don't like, but it's so important she stays quiet. Without them, she'd be leaping about. So far, she's just nicely chilled.
Got lots of new chewies and toys, so hopefully keeping her happy.
She has completely gone off raw food, so tried nature diet and she loves it.

She seems to sleep all night, but I keep thinking that if I move upstairs something will happen!
Got vet appointment later today so hope he's pleased so far. xx

Aww I'm sure she'll be fine for you to go to bed now, how about a set of cheap baby monitors? Then you'd hear her if she gets upset xx

Back from the vet who is pleased with her. The huge bandage has come off, which is good.
Downside is we now have the cone of shame. She hates it.
A week Monday the staples will come out and then we can start slow tiny walks.   

Great progress... Bet you can't wait to finally get out for a walk

Thank goodness she has a calm nature or it would be sooo difficult.
When the weather is ok we can sit in the garden and she can watch the rabbits in the field over the fence.
Never before had I wanted time to fly!   

Aww Annie, pleased Toots is progressing well. Remember, it's not even a week since her op. Time will pass quicker than you think. Had two periods like this when Stella was young and we used to take her out in the car to stop the monotony of being in the house all the time. She enjoyed just looking out of the window. Mental stimulation with her new toy will also help. Love to you both xx

Yes she loves the car, and fortunately has always had a crate in the back, so I know she's safe in there.

Kathy, I'd dearly love that, in fact I have one, but when mentioned it to the vet he said dogs can actually get to stitches with those. (He'd seen disasters) As it's her leg, she could learn to bring the leg round the collar and get to it!
They are wonderful for other areas on the body.
So we're stuck with the horrible plastic one. Can't risk removing it even briefly.  xx

Thanks for all your lovely encouragement. It's really helping us get through this awful time.
Can't even have any friends round as she goes bonkers with excitement.

Toots had the staples removed yesterday. End of cone!
She is so much happier without it. Me too.
She couldn't wait to get into the vet surgery. I was dreading going thinking she'd be a nervous wreck after what she's been through, but no, wagging as usual. She sat beautifully while the staples were taken out.
Back Monday for a consultation about starting slow walks.
There is no sign of lameness at all, so all going well.
