Staffy needs serious help please!!!
Hello everyone, I own a year old blue staffordshire bull terrier and he has some serious issues that I myself have attempted to deal with and have had no luck. We never taught him to stop biting and jumping when he was a puppy, so now he has become very spoiled. He is calm for the most part when you first go out and start petting him, but the minute you stop he jumps up and begins to bite our arms, legs, anything. His bites are extremely painful too. He does not respond to verbal commands such as no, or any form of yelling or loud command. He also does not respond to a tap on the nose, or a slight nudge in the lower back. Nothing is working, and he is getting worse and worse!!! We don't have the money to hire any sort of trainer, does anyone know what I can do???
Thanks so much!!!

Re: Staffy needs serious help please!!!
We are taking out 6 month old to dog classes, not because he needs it but because I think its good for any dog and they are only £65 for 6 sessions. Most classes cover jumping and biting along with recall etc.
I would say you owe it to your dog to take him to classes and find the money some how as from the sounds of what you have written above you have let him become the leader of the pack

Re: Staffy needs serious help please!!!
hi you should give pet corrector spray a go its compressed air in a can and makes a very loud noise designed to snap them out of what ever behaviour they are doing, dont spray it at them just near them, hope this helps
Re: Staffy needs serious help please!!!
From your post it sounds like you dog hasn't had any proper training so you need to start from the beginning go right back to basics as if he was 8 weeks old again. To be honest I really feel you need to get him to training classes because without trying to sound rude before you train him you need training yourself and classes are perfect for this.
There's no point in using corrector spray in my opinion because he hasn't had the training to start with he won't understand and by using something like that it will just scare him and make him wary of you.
There should be someone along soon who has training experience that may be able to help more but to be honest I would say get him to training classes ASAP

Echo Steve. Why not train him? So much less stressful to prevent behaviour than fix it. Great post from Debs, go back to basics and start from scratch with the use of a trainer. Training classes aren't that expensive, and I'm sorry but if you bought a puppy and didn't bother to train him then you should have prepared for having to call in a trainer when he's fully grown and unruly.
I also agree, don't use pet corrector. That doesn't train your dog, it scares them out of carrying out that behaviour and suppresses it. He needs to learn what's appropriate and what's not.

Re: Staffy needs serious help please!!!
When you say he does not respond to verbal commands does he react to his name and positive words like biscuit or walkies?
He will be pushing boundaries and will continue to see what he can get away with, it's not going to be a quick and easy process but staffys hate being ignored try when he jumps up a single firm low pitched no (not shouting) and turn your back on him when he is calm and all four feet on the floor/in sit reward him
I got Ledger for rescue aged 2 and done so much training with him sure it would be easy to allow a puppy to get away with things which he will be too big and powerful for as an adult dog and a reason why lots of dogs get given up when that cute stage has passed but good news is he isn't to old to learn you may not be able to afford classes but there is plenty of advice on here/you tube etc you will also find that the mental stimulation of training will tire him out as much as a long walk

Yup echo everything already said. My Flo is an older girl and we we're able to teach her so you should be ok with consistent training.

Re: Staffy needs serious help please!!!
any unwanted jumping up keep turning your back on dog ignoring the bad behaviour ,by shouting and interacting with your dog when he does this is all still attention whether good or bad everyone that visits or u go and see needs to do this aswell when your out on a walk i wouldnt let anyone pet him until u have this unwanted jumping up sorted as some people out and about dont realise they encourage this behaviour. dog classes dont have to cost the earth look around the 1st trainer i called wanted £12.50 a class or £40 home visit! i found one that not only owned a rescue staffy but cost £3.50 per class essential for dog and owner defo u learn along with your dog

Just a thought: you said he does not respond to verbal commands did you check his hearing?
It has nothing to do with luck your dog desperately needs training and you need to be trained to have the tools too do it as everybody said before I would take him to classes or contact a trainer ASAP.
