Best Harness for a Staffie?
Hello again!
I hope you are all well. My puppy had a phobia of walking which was because her harness was rubbing her. It was a Y shaped type harness and rubbed her arm pits badly. I have another similar harness and that is starting to go the same way. Have been looking at proper leather harnesses as I need one that doesnt cut into the the armpit area - but obviously the leather ones are a bit more than I wanted to pay and shes growing so rapidly it wont last long (am on last notch of the 4th collar Iv bought in 4 months!). Most of what I see still have that Y shape that goes over the front legs and meets in the same place as the rear strap on the back. A vest type harness wont be any good as she hates the one I have got being put over her head.
Any idea of a brand that would be ok ? This is the old one that was bad.

Have you tried a head collar instead of a harness?

Nope not sure if I fancy one really - but to be fair I dont really know a lot about them and she doesnt really pull. I use a harness as a friends dog died who sliped out of its collar and we all use harnesses nowxx

Re: Best Harness for a Staffie?
They look good but are similar price to the leather ones - and I dont want to spend too much until she has finished growing, she is on her 4th collar and 3rd harness in 3 months so shes growing really quick xx

Re: Best Harness for a Staffie?
they are very good, especially if the harness rubs these ones work differently so they don't rub on the fur or skin
Re: Best Harness for a Staffie?
Thanks just been looking on Ebay and they around £20 but can get a leather one for £16 - again dont want to spend that much as it will only last a month or so before she grows out of it! xx

Re: Best Harness for a Staffie?
But I do like the style of those Hurtta ones - and will get one when she slows down growing as I will get some use out of it then which will make it worth buying xx

Re: Best Harness for a Staffie?
I use trixie harnesses, they're fleece lined and don't rub bis, who is rubbed by everything! Hers cost me £10 on Amazon and has lasted 6 months so far, for a pup I'm sure they'd be cheaper

Re: Best Harness for a Staffie?
Yes those Trixie ones are a good shape as the rear strap goes towards the back of the dog rather than cutting into armpit. Excellentxx

Re: Best Harness for a Staffie?
Yep. Biscuit's strap is about half way down her tummy, which can be a little more difficult to handle but is more comfy for them. I use a double lead attached to harness and collar for control, as Biscuit is reactive and very strong! But for a little one I'm sure it would be okay don't sound right, totally understandable! X

thats okay, they are good harnesses but yeah your right about she still growing it probably is a waste of money maybe when shes older would be better
Re: Best Harness for a Staffie?
Lady wears a ( * 4paws comfort-control harness .. )
EDIT: i think it's a pets@home own brand of 'comfort harness'
it be a neoprene mesh type .. really soft comfortable and breathable
.. and strong ..
pic attached :
no 'skin-rubbing' issues at all ..
washes easily 'n dries quick ..
bought them ( she has 2 ) at pets@home
~~~~~~~~
oops .. didn't read this at first:
'Lady' hated the collar that came with her from the rescue place .. she'd do all to avoid it being put on ..
but she'll co-operate fully with the harness .. sits very still 'n doesn't move her head away ..
and she has another type that has some sort of towelling material on the 'armpit' straps ..
( like a tube over the strap itself )
that one needs her to lift her forelegs to place inside the loops ..
and she'll do that on her own with an "up" command as i touch her leg .. same with taking it off :-)
Hi, we just got the ezy dog harness and lead combo for £36 from pets at home, its up there with the best £36 I've ever spent!!!! Such a good fit and design and it really helped to be able to try different sizes before buying
Its the same price there as it is online too
Re: Best Harness for a Staffie?
I've used many different harnesses since I've had Zeus and had to change them for a number of reasons (mainly because he pulled more in some than others and also because alot of them made his armpits very sore).
Last year, I purchased the perfect fit harness (http://dog-games-shop.co.uk/perfect-fit-fleece-dog-harness) and I honestly can't recommend it enough. It really is perfect fit but it took a while to get there, initially, we ordered the wrong size so the company sent out a number of different sizes which I then sent back after we found the right one.
But ever since, Zeus has been on it, he's been a different dog, he pulls much less and when I do have to hold him back, i don't feel bad that I'm hurting his armpits or doing unnecessary damage as it just sticks to him.
I coupled the harness with the 'Halti training lead' where I clip one end into Zeus's collar and the other in his harness for maximum control and it works a treat.
That looks like an exact copy of the EZYDOG Chest Plate harness Marquez had a problem with his first harness which would rub and cut under his armpits but once I brought the EZYDOG Plate Harness, that problem stopped. He actually loves this harness to. Maybe that DOGNESS one isn't made of the right material or made right which is what causes the problem.
Have to say that the 4paws comfort-control harness that Lady is wearing looks awesome too
Re: Best Harness for a Staffie?
The ezy dog harness rubbed biscuit red raw but she has little to no hair on her tummy, so may be more sensitive than others!
Re: Best Harness for a Staffie?
Wow thank you all so so so much will get nosing round at all the suggestions you made, and I am glad you all understood what I meant about rubbing the arm pits, was struggling to describe it and a lot of harness are a similar shape to the Dogness one and was struggling to find an alternative. Thanks again everyone xxx
Just looking on here and they are great, I like how they are modular and you can just change the one part if they outgrow or damage am liking these a lot.
We use the perfect fit harness from (http://dog-games-shop.co.uk/perfect-fit-fleece-dog-harness) we think its fantastic. Strong but fleece lined and doesn't rub. And as it comes in three parts you get the 'perfect fit'. A bit pricey but so worth it.
