Fatty Tumours & Arthritis
Hi all .....Our staffy Chase will be 13 next month and is having major problems with getting up and down stairs and his bed :(he is currently on fish oil supplements and glucosamine tablets and has had 4 injections from vet to lubricate joints but after a week he ceases up again :(does anyone have any idea's ??????? His appetite is great and although his eyes are fogging over and he is a little deaf and is covered with fatty tumours we need to make him comfortable. The vet tells me he is well and truly past his expiry (age 10-12 years at best) but our Chase is no ordinary staffy and we want him around for as long as we can have him.

Re: Fatty Tumours & Arthritis
Hello. Your Chase sounds exactly like Stella (13 last Saturday). She suffers from arthritis in her back legs and also front left elbow and has to be helped when climbing stairs and also getting in and out of the car.
We have tried the injections Cartrophen and did'nt work, although in some dogs it does apparantly. Nsaids are no good for Stella because of the many risks involved as she has seasonal skin allergies and has to go on small courses of steroids to control the constant itch.
Our vet prescribed tramadol and symmetrel which are human drugs but lots of vets use them for pain relief in dogs. Stella has been taking this combination for over a year now and although still very slow, she does'nt seem to be in as much pain as she used to be.
She also has numerous fatty lumps and bumps but vet says we have to leave them alone (due to her age) unless they become huge and aggressive looking or bothering her.
I'm sure your Chase can be helped like Stella and he and she are certainly not past their expiry dates

Stella also has supplements. Yumove, which I think Janey's Moo also takes, Glucosamine/Chondroitin. The Yumove tablet has the secret ingredient green lipped muscle powder as well as the former ingredients.
She seems to be taking a lot of medication but all are helping.
Stella has had Luxating patellas on both her knees when she was very young. Both operated on and was advised to give her Glucosamine daily.
Certainly has helped her over the years

Re: Fatty Tumours & Arthritis
Moo is younger but we use Forever Freedom Aloe Vera Gel, it has worked wonders with her, after being on it for only a week I took her off the metacam and stopped the injections. It really might be worth a thought, its for humans with joint problems - and is fantastic for animals - like Yumove it is natural - if you want me to give you any details then just shout.
I also have steps up the bed and the sofa as she struggles there, fortunately we don't have stairs to cope with Xx

Hi Janey. Where can I buy Forever freedom gel for Stella? If it works for Moo it may help Stella. I'll try anything especially as it's a natural product. Does Moo still take Yumove? xx

Since being on the aloe I haven't needed any other supplements, I buy mine from ebay, you can't buy it in shops but only from a seller, they usually cost £28 from them (if you no one!) or ebay slightly cheaper - just make sure you go for the right one -they look similar!!

Re: Fatty Tumours & Arthritis
Not disagreeing with that, as I said in my first post Moo is younger and as she is younger I would prefer her not to be on medication for the rest of her life so I also think if people are asking for suggestions this has done wonders for us

Re: Fatty Tumours & Arthritis
Thanks Janey. I may try that but I have to be careful not to suddenly take Stella off her meds.
I would prefer her to just have natural health products but with her age I think she may still need help with painkillers.
As you say, Moo is a lot younger and it's wonderful that you have found something that works xx

My mum started giving her old dog (14 year old collie) yumove about 6 months ago after I saw it recommended on here, it has given her a whole new lease of life, can highly recommend it

Re: Fatty Tumours & Arthritis
It means dislocation of the knee cap so is the same condition. Can be graded from 1 to 4.
Stella had grade 2 at 9 months then grade 3 in other knee a year later. Vet advised surgery but depending on the grade, surgery is'nt always necessary. Hers used to pop out but was more out than in so damaged her second knee as used her other leg more.

Re: Fatty Tumours & Arthritis
my vet didnt grade chesters and it only was his right knee until recently then a few months back i heard a yelp and he was doing the same with his left leg (he becomes lame until it pops back in) my vet said its a genetic thing with chester and said surgery was a last resort as it doent have a great success rate?? not sure what you think on that one also vet said £4000 a leg and unfortunately chester is no longer insured for his knees! vet told me short walks which have defo helped as long walks made his legs sore the next day, and keeping him a good weight! if we r out and he becomes lame i stretch his leg out and massage it which helps but i do worry how as he gets older this is all going to effect him (he is a xstaffy and has legs like a kangaroo) and chesters are more in than out at moment any other tips on how to keep on top of this?

Re: Fatty Tumours & Arthritis
I don't know for sure if I can give you any advice other than give him supplements if surgery is not an option. Also watch his weight. The cost for me 11/12 years ago was £900 first op and second was £1300. Luckily we had her insured.
Stella has longer legs than standard like Chesters and I used to massage when lame but i was so worried as she was still a pup and loved her walks so much, we went with surgery.
OMG £4000. Disgraceful. We should have National health service for our much beloved animals I reckon Keep me updated and good luck x
