Worried About Way Puppy and Older Dog Play
I have a 2 yr old boy and 6 mth girl. They are very funny together and obviously enjoy each others company but I am worried about how rough they play. When Poppy had her baby teeth, Harley was always covered in marks and scratches, some pretty bad, but she never had a mark on her. Since losing most of those needle sharp teeth, their play seems rougher but neither are marked from it. Poppy snarled and growls and you can hear her teeth hit together, she bares her teeth too. It doesn't start that way but usually ends up like that with both of them rolling around the floor with various bits of each other in their mouths. Harley doesn't growl show his teeth or snarl at all and let's her get on with it but stands his ground. I can put my hand between their mouths and the play stops never is it directed at me and if I call 'come' they both race to me.. The thing is their play sounds like a fight curtesy of Poppy, and looks rough so I don't know whether to stop it or just let them get on. When Harley has had enough he does let Poppy know and very reluctantly she backs off; I have only heard her cry twice but poor Harley is always getting caught a bit too hard at times!

Does it sounds anything like this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1cwNV_cvT4
If so dont worry, the noisey one in that vid is my youngest and also female while Marley is totaly silent she is the one making all the noise. they always go for each others legs and necks and neither has injured the other one. When one has had enough they will stop and I can verbaly stop them as they usually like to do it when Im on the phone...

Re: Worried About Way Puppy and Older Dog Play
Thanks Nathan. I have eventually watched the vid and it's exactly the same. Phew, not just mine then. From reading other forum posts, my 2 are behaving exactly like other Staffies, so again phew. I find it amazing that they can play that hard and not have all sorts of injuries, just shows what control they really have. We took both of them to a really busy boot sale, not to buy anything ( we did) but to socialise them ( both rescues). They were brilliant but owners of small yapping dogs ought to be ashamed of the way they allow them to behave with such aggression! We also met an 18mth male Staff, huge well developed muscles, pulling the owner around. he was also allowing him to approach any dog and hump it and kept him on a long lead so it was hard to get away. Accident waiting to happen I think. Anyway, again thanks.

Re: Worried About Way Puppy and Older Dog Play
no problem, some dogs do play hard and they love it. sometimes the noise growling and barking, hanging of each other yanking legs etc makes people think its agression.... it isnt. watch the body language and see that they are venting a desire to play. some dogs like to chase others skip around each other ours and others like a bit of contact and will let any dog know if its going to far. laska will go at it like a bull in a china shop but if it gets a bit to heavy for her she submits and rolls on he back.
i so wish i had a vid camera last night in the park, all the guys met each other for the first time since last october. there was riley a mastiff cross staff, paddy a gsd, my two, elsie a staff cross jrt two labs and ross the springer that kept on the sidelines. the noises sounded like war had broken out and we should have been picking bits of dog up off the park but thats just how they greet and play with each other. paddy and riley are especially loud! and when laska has both her front legs wrapped around paddys neck while he grumbles at her you can tell he has a soft spot for her despite his very public denial. when he thinks no one is looking he licks her scruff and nuzzles her the big soft git

Re: Worried About Way Puppy and Older Dog Play
Nathan such a great video of your two!
Bane is exactly the same as this with our neighbours dog. As soon as Sabre has had enough or is tired, Bane starts growling and barking at him and also turns into a snappy crocodile trying to encourage him to play. He also did it to my parents Staff and when they got going they just went nuts, biting each other, going for eachothers legs and scruffs, it's amazing how they don't hurt one another when they are literally hanging off a mouthful of skin! :O
