new little puppy.
Hi everyone, I am a first time staffie owner and we have just got ourselves a little boy staffie, he comes home with us on the 24th of April, I have had such negative opinions today it has kind of put a dampner on things, I have a 4 year old son, and everyone is telling me he' gonna attack my son...I have been using this site for helpful tips on training and I know what I have to do,its such a shame everyone has to be so negative
If anyone has any training advice that would be brilliant thank you.

Thank you, recently I was involved with a DDA case and my friends staffie was PTS as he was deemed 'type' it broke my.heart and it's made me have a overwhelming love for the animal, I just needed to hear some positivity I think I can't wait for my son to have a best friend growing up

Re: new little puppy.
The ignorance and breed prejudice never seems to go away and never gets any less frustrating and annoying to those who know\own\love Staffordshire Bull Terriers.
We can only change their perception by example. Just enjoy making all those people that have been spouting negative bullshit (they obviously have never been around a SBT) eat their words. Strange how they all fall in love and are "so surprised" when they finally get to feel the love and joy a SBT exudes in every breath.
CHANGING PERCEPTIONS, ONE AT A TIME!
PS: Point the doubters at Google, search Dog attacks on Humans by breed. Lots of surveys return, NONE have the Staffordshire in the top 50 if I remember correctly.

Re: new little puppy.
Congratulations Sounds like these people read too many newspapers. Many people on the forum have staffies and children who get on just wonderfully, and I myself have grown up with staffies from 2 years old. Temperament of course varies, and pup and owner should always be paired up without just choosing a random puppy, not because of aggression, but because they have personalities just like people do and not everybody gets on with everybody. They're bull terriers ultimately and can be stubborn, willful and larger than life. Though also very smart, affectionate to the extreme and quick to learn.
With an aggressive owner they may well be aggressive, and with an owner too soft they may well run riot. Give them balance, boundaries, positive socialization and lots of fun and they'll be your best friend. I never have, and never would keep another breed

Re: new little puppy.
My mum has also been around staffies all of her life, but her girlfriend was really scared of Biscuit initially, my lady just seemed to sense it and sat next to her calmly, wagging her tail whenever she looked at her lol! She's come round now and my dad's wife if a sight hound lady and wouldn't have Biscuit anywhere near her dogs (still won't now!) but my dad's fallen in love with her, she sits on his lap and chews his beard whenever he visits lol!
It's sad when they're such loving dogs and get shunned so often. I really like collies, but they've attacked children too and are much more likely to bite than a staffie due to their nippy herding instincts. Having worked with bull breeds for the last 5 years, I've been bitten by more collies and small terriers, I've never personally been bitten by a staffie. He's gorgeous, enjoy him

Re: new little puppy.
Yeah, I think my mum worries because of the damage staffies can do, my mum's collie is a little.shit (for lack.of.a better word) if you grab his.collar.he bites, he really makes.me angry because he chases my son, and.of course Eli being 4 thinks it's a game, they havent socialised the collie, so he's an assed with other dogs, which means I won't be able to.take Loki up there at Christmas....

Re: new little puppy.
That is a good point, but if it's taken into account just how many staffies are in the UK, and how many attacks we hear of, it puts it into perspective. Y'know, the dogs that have attacked have all been part of welfare investigation at some point, one was kept in a small cage for 24 hours a day and had never seen the outside world. I wish the newspapers would publish the backgrounds of these dogs too, if a human had been kept indoors from birth, fed junk food and never allowed into the outside world I'm sure we'd have sympathy for them.
Also can't stand seeing collie's in normal pet homes, they're working dogs and need a job, nothing against your mum but poor boy.

Re: new little puppy.
Yeah, that's what I was dying there is always a reason behind the attack, even.if it's something tiny that we wouldn't think it's significant but might be huge to the dog,
Yeah my mum lives in a massive farmhouse, but you are right he just gets bored and is then destructive, and such a pain in the ass
