Re: vets in an hour
poor Dakota
it must be difficult time for you.. but I'm sure she'll be ok and soon you will enjoy having her back
Caryll what bones exactly do you mean when saying softer and easily dissolving? I am about to give Mambo his first bone sometime next week and I want to make sure it will be easy for him to eat/digest it...

Re: vets in an hour
OMG....a piece of rubber???? So was there any bone like you first thought? Either way it's not good. She's been thru a lot so far the poor darling. At least now the blockage has been cleared. Now just to get her better again.....so obviously plenty of rest and TLC. I'm sure the vet will have her best interest at heart and will give her any medication she needs to help with pain, inflamation etc.....

Re: vets in an hour
Oh poor Dakota and poor you. At least it's out of her now, and hopefully she'll heal up fast. Fingers and paws crossed, and good vibes coming your way!
Re: vets in an hour
Oh, no, i've only just seen this! Poor Dakota!
If it's any consolation, after Dempsey's stomach operation on a tuesday, he was home by thursday! You will have to feed tiny amounts of food at regular intervals for a while, and it'll have to be a specific dietary food that will go through easily - the vet will advise you on that.
I know that any stomach/intestine surgery is major (they call it 'dirty surgery' because of the risk of infection) but vets nowadays are really skilled at avoiding contamination during the op, so she has every chance of a speedy recovery. At least your vets decided to operate when they did.
I don't feed marrow bones or weight bearing bones. Dempsey only ever has neck/spine/rib bones because they are softer and the stomach acids break them down. If you put a marrow bone and a spine bone side by side & hit them with a mallet, you'll see that the marrow bone may not break at all, and if it does, it will break into quite long pieces. The spine however will smash, but not into sharp or large pieces.
But the Dempsey doesn't have 'recreational' bones - he has food bones, they form part of his daily food.

Poor girl, she must have felt so poorly! Glad she's back to her old self again, though.
I know vets charge the earth, but they save lives as well, so what price a life? Easy for me to say, I've got insurance. Dempsey in 2 years has cost over £5000, all but £285 (excess) covered by the insurance company!
