Need help on staffy breed is he cross ?

Hi everyone ,Im a newbie, first of all what a fantastic website ...Ive none stopped googled since i got my new addition for all the info i need etc and have to say this by far the best ...Im worried that my new addition "fudgy bits" is a cross, with a pit bull... and if he is i want to make sure i go down the right procedure as Im told these breed of dogs are illegall, and NO-WAY DO I WANT TO LOSE HIM, so any info or advice would be greatly appreciated ... ive attached some photos , well i hope they work , fingers crossed.....

he looks nothing like a pit bar the colour, the head is alllllll wrong

Aarrggh, just looked on the dda watch page and it's awful, poor dogs.

We have no certain info on Alfie but we dna'd him and it came back staffy/mastiff/mongrel mix, would that help if they ever asked about him or is that inadmissible evidence?

there no DNA tests it's an con, any cross breed can be sized dogs doesn't have to have ban breeds in them to be class as TYPE

I would disagree that the DNA tests are a con, they have limitations of course but it is based on scientific data, not just some bloke with a printer making up random reports.

You only send off the swab, no other info about the dog, and Alfies came back with breeds that we expected them to find.

But if the actual breed doesn't matter for bsl, its just the appearance of the dog then it cant help with that anyway.

Hi, if you are really curious, then you can for approx £60, buy a DNA testing kit which will tell you exactly what mix he is. We did this with our rescue dog, as she looks very "type". Trouble is, pitbulls come in all shapes and sizes, there has never been any kind of breed standard, and by their very nature, the breed is very loosely defined. I have several reference books on the breed, as have been into them and all bull breeds for over 30 years and if you look at the books and the history of the breed you will see the huge variety in shape and size. Trouble is, all that does, is make it real easy for Policeman or dog warden to say your dog is pitbull type. It's a sad fact that there is pretty much nothing you can do to stop your dog being seized if someone in authority wants to, under the DDA...and I am talking any dog, let alone one that looks Type.....

Having the DNA test , while not admissible or reliable as any kind of proof will help and will tell you exactly what you have, I would very much recommend this.

And finally, as has been said earlier in the thread, just make sure you look after him - always keep him on a lead and under control, be a responsible owner, train him well and you should have no trouble.

i think that joe public will always have it in for staffies and bullie dogs until, at the very least, they are aware of things like positive reinforcement training instead of this Cesaer Milan/Victoria Woodhouse nonsense, punitive training. When the scientific research prevails and this becomes the norm, which im sure it eventually will, the amounts of negative dog behaviours and in particular, aggression will decline. My personal thoughts are that any responsible owner of these breeds owes it to themselves, and the breed to use positive training immediately...it might just save your dogs life one day.

It looks like he could be a ridgeback/staffy cross. Whatever he is he is gorgeous.

Its a puppy and to me it looks like a cross. Steve has posted some good info as have others. Id say no its not a pit cross (type cross) you aint gonna find many pitts in uk and those that do have/breed them wont cross them thats a fact. Ddawatch are fantastic people and not just about type dogs as I have had a need for there advice myself and a phone call was answerd at 23:30 and very good advice given. A good friend of mine just completed a 350mile cycle for fundraiser for them and I cant endorse anyone else enough for general dog legal help.

Back to the origonal question, you will find that everyone on the street is a pitt expert yet given a set of photos of bull breeds they wouldnt be able to pic one out in a month of sundays. A pup goes through a whole maner of changes as it grows and may resemble something completely different in a couple of weeks
