can they recognise their pups?
firstly i must apologise as i didnt have my camera..................again!
went to mylocal field this evening and Woody's mum was there. after keeping them on leads for a while with lots of loving and nice behaviour we let them run off lead together. they had an absolute ball running and playing and hugging (although a few inappropriate sniffs/licks for mother and son!!). would they have recognised each other after 13 months since i took him away from her or is that just me being abig softy and hoping they knew?
we are hoping to meet up again in next few days so big big promises i will take my camera!

it would be sweet to think that Bella saw Woody today and though "oh what a handsome boy my baby has turned out to be.........now give me the stick i'm your mother!"

Re: can they recognise their pups?
I think the memory fades gradually over the months. He may have recognised that he knew her scent, but I doubt he'd have known she was his mother, dogs don't think that way.
Bandit, when he was a little over 12 months old, met his mum at a show. She went for him, and he went for her! So, no recognition there!

I really don't think they do. I know that researched has pointed to the fact that as soon as they become independant of their mother (even if they live in the same house still) they start to act differently towards each other. They will still be friendly, but for example, a male pup will want to mate with his mother as soon as he's able, and she'll want the same!
They just don't have reasoning powers the way we do.

Re: can they recognise their pups?
Im not sure if they know or not but my bitch had 3 puppies 2 years ago and when she sees them they act very submissively and all revert back to puppy behaviour. I have never seen a cross word with Skibadee or her pups either even if they havnt seen one another for a month or so (given that Skib can b DA). The puppies (well not any more) also retained the same hierarchy as when they were born and have since.
I think if they see each other regularly they do remember, I'm sure mine do!
Although its true that any dog will mate with any other dog family or not, its their instinct!

Re: can they recognise their pups?
I don't think they remember that a certain dog is their mother or son/daughter etc. But I do think that they remember a pecking order if they see each other regularly.

Yes I agree with that Duke always remembered his mum she was the pack leader in her house. She was the only one he ever was submisive to and it was good to see just one look from her and he would be a bit of a quiver she was a awsome dog.
Dont think he knew she was mum but there was definatly a connection or memory there.
Holly never met her mum the breeder didnt really care what happened to her once the money had changed hands

Re: can they recognise their pups?
Mouse sees her mother and they both definitly know whos who, always have a sniff and when mouse's dad sees her (hes a bully) her mummy protects her from him. Mouse's mum is very different to dogs that where/are her puppys from previous litters aswell, just on sight she recognises them and after a sniff confirms it.
But saying that Mouse has her adobted doggy mother my lurcher scruffy aswell.
