Re: benefit street
I have empathy but everybody has choices in life. I loves in a caravan for years, and then a council estate until I left home at 16. I was in a lot of trouble when I was a teenager.. My parents disowned me, I was on drugs, had mental health problems and lived in a garage! I got sacked from my job for stealing (later got proved innocent) I didn't have any prospects but I worked my a*s off and changed it for myself.. So many of my friends are either still in the same place, in prison or dead.. I chose to get out. It wasn't easy, but you do what you gotta do. There are options, even if it's factory work. These people don't want to take those options.

Re: benefit street
agree with this totally, if someone is willing to make an effort and try to better their life for the best, I'd give them a chance...Rachel33 wrote:Depends what the job was really.. If they were now clean and proven to be reliable I would yeah!

Re: benefit street
Certainly depends what job but there is certainly work if you want it speaking to some of the large factories/abattoirs etc round here they are now having to advertise in Poland etc as they can't fill the jobs
Met a Romanian chap a few weeks ago he spoke no English came over to be with he partner as she had got a full time job in a care home got himself a job in a curry house pot washing but it's all about what you are prepared to do for minimum wage
Look at the 50p guy that was on the first week, showed initiative and just got himself out there and I believe had job offers because of the show

Anyone who makes a lifestyle choice does just that
Ok take two tramps one is there because he doesn't want to live in a house he choses to be out there and will not engage with support or any help that is offered the second fell on hard times and lost everything he wants to get off the street and will attend the night shelters and engage with authorities for help
The key is people have to want to change
You comment on the state of the houses and yet the occupants are sat out front smoking all day that's a lot of time and money that could be redirected!

Re: benefit street
it all depend what has happen to that person then...
say someone been abused for most of their life there different type of abuse well you know that jules and they just dont want to leave their house this person is unfit to work cutting his or her benefits or make this people homeless how is this going help this person...
yea there are some that could but there more that just aint fit to work... making these people work you just going have more people committing suicide is this really what we want? kids losing there mum or dads becasue they being made to do something they just cant?

Re: benefit street
Yes there are some people who have genuinely * starts to life but for every one that becomes a victim of life is someone with the same start that changed their life
For whatever reason they seized the opportunity to change
There really isn't the support out there for a lot of people who need specific mental health and drugs intervention but unless they are off the chart with their behavior many need to admit that they have a problem before they can get any help
