Leash Control
Hello again.
Just wondered if any of you have Staffys who pull on the leash (silly question huh )
Roxy is 5 months old and generally "ok" on the leash if it is just her with the person who's walking her, but once you add some distraction or excitement into the equation such as a companion for the walk, other passers by, other dogs, kids playing etc..... well it's a whole other story. She pulls constantly on the leash and sounds like she's going to choke.
I'll try to make my ramblings short.... At puppy training this morning, she was so excited and wanted to socialise with her friends that she actually pulled so much that she vomitted So, my whole time there this morning I spent working on lead control. Gosh, it's gonna take some time I think.
So basically what i'm wondering is, How do you deal with leash control / leash pulling ??????
Is there hope for us yet
Also....would you reccomend sticking with a standard collar or getting a harness ???

Re: Leash Control
My 2 walk nice on the lead but when they were young I was constantly giving commands and encouragment to them all the time. If I saw something coming first I would prepare the dogs hope it makes sence.
And I think thats paid off for me now.
I see some people out with there dogs and I cringe how they cope being dragged around
My motto is practice makes perfect

Re: Leash Control
Moo also walks well onlead. Are you using a harness as this may help stop the choking, or I know a lot on here swear by the halti leadas it may offer more control, as Gem said its also practice, Roxy is still young x

Re: Leash Control
we started billy off on a harness beacuse of the pulling, every time he pulled we just stopped and told him to sit or turned around, this took a few months and a lot of hard work, but we got there.
now he walks lovely on a lead with a collar, just time and patience will help

Re: Leash Control
Thanks guys for your suggestions and advise.
It's been on my mind all weekend, and have decided to go out and get her a harness. It's horrible to hear the noise she makes while pulling and i'm really worried she will do some damage to herself.
I know some people say the dogs are able to pull more on a harness but it's gonna make me feel better about not hurting her. I am more than happy to work with her and persevere with the leash training but using a harness instead of collar.
I'll keep ya' posted

Vanessa , it did'nt work.
Doh, my Roxy has a purple collar and lead currently and i've just bought her a harness on my way home from work. It's an EzyDog EzyHarness and is camouflage pink colour...LOL
Now, if she would just stay still long enough for me to get it on her and fit it properly we'd be fine
I'll try and post a photo when I win the battle

Re: Leash Control
I find that the standard harness gives you no control over the business end of a staff (ie the head!). You can get harnesses witha ring on the back as usual, but also with a ring on the front (the chest strap bit). Then, if you get a double ended training lead you can clip it on the front and the back & have double control!

Re: Leash Control
the only thing i have found with those style harness where the clip is on the side is that if it gets caught or dogs are playing it can easily break and come open. I have a harness where the clip is on the top of the harness and two D rings either side of it so u pull them together and clip the lead on. If the clip does break then the harness is still held by the D RINGS X

Re: Leash Control
I'm not bothered about side rings - that was just an example - it's the front ring that I would find useful. It controls the front end of a dog. I'm having to use a harness on Dempsey at the mo because of his bad ear, and the ring is on the top - it's a nightmare! I have very little control. If he decides he's going in a different direction it takes a lot of strength to get his 5 stones back on track! The front ring uses the dog's own strength and forward momentum to bring him back round to where you want to go.

Re: Leash Control
Jethro looks so relaxed ..... and gorgeous as usual.
Well, i got the harness home and went to fit it but I think I need the next size down. I tightened it as far as I could but it kept slipping down her side.
I'm gonna take it back tomorrow and see if they have a smaller size. If not, then i'll have another look at what they've got
