Colds
Hi guys, do dogs get colds? Katy has been sneezing a lot in the past two days & her nose is running. Which wouldn't be so bad but we are all getting sprayed, I keep telling her to put her paw over her mouth but she doesn't. She's curled up in front of our open fire at the mo keeping warm

Re: Colds
Yes, they can. Debo even had a cough. The vet told us to give Debo vit C, half tablet a day. Hope she feels better now.

Re: Colds
Lola is 'snorting' a lot at the moment - for want of a better word. I want to take her to the vet's but hubby thinks I'm over-reacting. It's sort of a cough/sneeze/snort.

I always prefer to be sure 100%, I know that cough in dogs could mean heart problems.

Re: Colds
Is it definitely not kennel cough? There are many different strains of it and there's loads going around. Any nasal discharge or temperature? Kennel cough can often start with sneezing, lethargy, nasal discharge and progress to a hacking cough, vomiting, upset tummies and fever. Very common illness and can be treated with a simple dose of antibiotics prescribed by your vet, possibly with some meta am if she's very uncomfortable! X

Re: Colds
some info about vitamin C .. as related to dogs ..
http://k9joy.com/dogarticles/dogfood01vitaminC.pdf
from google search : ' how do dogs produce vitamin C ' ?
https://www.google.co.uk/?gws_rd=cr&ei=7WOBUrXRMsfQtAa_pIHIDA#q=how+do+dogs+produce+vitamin+c
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
i.m.h.o. .. i'd go easy when thinking about giving antibiotics ..
for anything but an 'severe' case scenario ..
( obviously with listening to a vets advice as well )
comes from having a dad who was an eye surgeon ..
i grew up listening to his medical opinions
he used to say .. back in the 1960's .. that someday ..
humanity would pay a price for relying too much on antibiotics
http://www.dog-illnesses-n-symptoms.com/antibiotics-for-dogs.html
from google search : ' the case against antibiotics for dogs ' ..
https://www.google.co.uk/?gws_rd=cr&ei=7WOBUrXRMsfQtAa_pIHIDA#q=the+case+against+antibiotics+for+dogs
be known that over use of antibiotics in humans is not good for the immune system
i.e. it can weaken the immune system
when Lady came home with me from the rescue kennels ..
she had a nasty cough .. didn't eat much ..
and was lowish on energy ..
i had a talk to the vet who suggested it might be kennel-cough
my opinion was to let her own immune system fight it
( as research showed it were about the equivalent of a bad cold or mild flu in humans )
the vet agreed with me .. saying if it got worse Then we should try antibiotics ..
Lady got over it within 2 weeks ..
Re: Colds
We of course in kennels couldn't just let them get over it as it's highly contagious and can cause permanent damage if caught when young. Whilst I do of course agree that antibiotics shouldn't be overused, unless you want to keep your dog inside for a few weeks while they're healing (would be irresponsible to walk them
In public as it is SO contagious and dangerous to elderly or dogs with lowered immune systems) I would prefer to get them better quickly. There are so many different strains, Biscuit too got over a mild strain on her own but I've seen dogs on drips because of how much it has dehydrated them with green slime pouring out of their noses and a dangerously high temperature.
