Re-naming
Hi was wondering if it was easy enough to change dogs name. I will be getting rescue dog soon but he doesn't seem to respond well to it.

Re: Re-naming
Just have a few really tasty treats handy. Say the new name & give a treat at the same time. Repeat several times & he'll soon associate the new name with good things.

Re: Re-naming
Don't forget that many rescue dogs are picked up off the streets & nobody knows their name! A name, to a dog, is just a way to gain their attention.

Toby was in family home prior to kennels he had to be rehomed due to allergies. I like the name Olly as got soft spot for Olly Murs

Re: Re-naming
Yes, you'll be able to change it. As I said, just make sure he associates the new name with good things & he'll soon respond to his new name.
I like Olly as well!

Re: Re-naming
You've made a great decision to adopt a Staffy. Changing the name is easy. After a few days of playing obedience games in the house, with tasty treats to encourage him, he will recognise his new name. Just use it sparingly.... only for calling him to you. Try to keep the association with the name positive (never during admonishments).
I hope you will be very happy together

Re: Re-naming
am seriously considering changing 'lady's name to 'daffy'
( i.e. daffy duck / daft )
she doesn't respond to 'lady' anyway .. but does respond to 'come 'ere' :-)
yelling 'come here lady' in public .. never thought that was such a great idea

Re: Re-naming
Daisy was from the pound and the rescue named her, she didn't really know her name when I got her but soon learned it, although now she answers to all her nick names too!

Re: Re-naming
Well done for giving a rescue dog a home, there are so many that needs homes, well done. As for the name change I'm sure if you follow the advice given he will soon respond to it.

Re: Re-naming
I wouldn't worry, I have no idea what Biscuit's name was as she was a stray, as were 90% of the shelter dogs I used to work with.. as others have said just make a positive association with the new name and all will be okay

Re: Re-naming
Ledger was George at dogs trust but really didn't seem to respond to a single syllable name and he really doesn't look like a George
