Seriously stressed out Rolo :(
Rolo caught his dew claw last week, he's had to have the nail removed. We had a nightmare getting him to leave the bandage and ended up having to use the cone of shame, however every time he had it on he panic'd, so it was decided to put it on only when he was in his cage to restrict his movement with it, which was fine, he'll happily go in his cage and he'll happily put it on, but he lays there shaking like a leaf when you look at him, rest of the time he just sleeps... Now he doesn't have to have a dressing on it, just a loose sock to let the air circulate, but he will not stop licking the whole area, it's constant, he's driving us bat nuts!! We've tried distraction we've tried strong No.. Leave.. kongs stuffed with his favourite things..spraying tea tree oil/ vick chest rub on the sock, nothing is stopping him, it's a complete stress reaction and I'm out of ideas as to how to stop it and make his life better. He is on antibiotics and he's on Metacam for pain relief. But he really is so stressed out it's breaking my heart

No worries, I just hate seeing him mentally so upset, I've phoned the vet and I can up his painkiller a bit, I've also put his jumper on try and coddle him and help him relax, all I can do is see if that helps him.

The good thing is that it heals really quickly, so he'll start to forget about it soon.
Have you thought about using a padded cone? They Sell them in our local pet store & they Seem to be more comfortable than the plastic ones?

A soft collar may well be a very good idea, was thinking of getting one for Rocky recently when he cut his foot:

Yeah not a comfy one for them, but it'll heal soon enough. All i will say is keep an eye on the nail when it grows back, Lola's never properly grew back and I ended up having the toe removed as she kept catching it.

Re: Seriously stressed out Rolo :(
I may look at getting an inflatable collar for future, although the vet didn't recommend one?...I gave up, I took the sock off, I took the cone off, and went for a good lead walk, then when I got back found the cold sausages and just stuck to a good leave... and sausage reward... till he cottoned on to..... I touch my foot i get sausage.. so we had to cut back.. but I'll bathe it tonight once in his cage and just leave his cone on over night. He's a lot more settled in himself and i'm crossing fingers he hasn't done to much damage. And that it will become less of a frustration for him. Thanks guys xx
