Best food for a pup?
Roman is on Pedigree Puppy wet and dry food at the moment, 3x a day. He has mainly dry food with some wet mixed into it.
The only reason he is on this is because thats what he was fed on with the breeders and I know not to change diet straight away.
I want to change him onto a good diet (the food hes on is making his poop sooooo smelly, worst poop Ive ever smelt lol) but something that won't break the bank either and is readily available.
I don't have time for making my own food and the BARF diet is too much for my pregnant brain to take in
Any recommendations?

I Hear Pedigree is not the best food to feed but Roxy gets it with some dry bakers and then in the afternoon round 4ish I give her raw and she loves it Bones and all

I'm afraid that you are actually feeding the worst food imaginable (Bakers) along with one that isn't far behind (Pedigree).jmk wrote:I Hear Pedigree is not the best food to feed but Roxy gets it with some dry bakers and then in the afternoon round 4ish I give her raw and she loves it Bones and all
Bakers is full of nasty additives known to cause hyperactivity and even cancer! There's also only a tiny amount of meat products in it!

Re: Best food for a pup?
Hi, we had the same problem with Harley, the breader fed him pedigree and after some falled atemps we tried royal canin, he loves it and has been fine on it, not over expensive and is cheaper if u buy bigger bags from internet.

raw mince is cheap and quick, and liver, and raw chicken wings. although the chicken wings disappear in a nano-second and I wonder if I've actually fed them they also have wainwrights as a 'filler' and pets at home scoop treats cost about 2 pounds for a weeks worth

Re: Best food for a pup?
You know I have never thought about feeding raw meat. My other half will not go for that at all I'm afraid... he won't eat meat himself and I would bet money his response would be "Whats wrong with biscuits?" Me and him have massive differences in opinionsjo garnett wrote:raw mince is cheap and quick, and liver, and raw chicken wings. although the chicken wings disappear in a nano-second and I wonder if I've actually fed them they also have wainwrights as a 'filler' and pets at home scoop treats cost about 2 pounds for a weeks worth
I used to feed my lab on Science Plan with Tripe mixed in and my Dogue used to get Beta again with tripe (and a tin of rice pudding once a week). Its been ages though since I had dogs so I'm not up to date on whats the best these days.
As I said ideally it needs to be easily accessible. I am house bound pretty much (Andy will do the walking after Romans had his jabs) so ideally something I can order with my Tesco shopping... I'm thinking maybe the James Well beloved?

Re: Best food for a pup?
I order raw mince, liver and chicken wings from Asda every week, along with all the cat food (swear the delivery men think we're a rather strange household!!)

Re: Best food for a pup?
How do you prepare it all? And can a 11 week old pup start on wings? So you blend it up together or just feed say mince one meal and wings the next?jo garnett wrote:I order raw mince, liver and chicken wings from Asda every week, along with all the cat food (swear the delivery men think we're a rather strange household!!)

Re: Best food for a pup?
I feed them a different one each night. Raw mince one night, liver the next, chicken wings the next. (Maybe chop the chicken wings in smaller bits though for a pup) Sunday, we (the humans!) have a cooked chicken so they get the leftovers (but NO cooked bones for the dogs) It's sort of evolved over the last 18 months. I know it's not perfect, but they're very happy and healthy

Re: Best food for a pup?
You can buy raw food for dogs already mixed up with all the good stuff in ready prepared which is great if you're short on time or you can't face handling all the various organs and grose bits!! Usually sold in bags or tubs frozen so easy to store.

Re: Best food for a pup?
you raw fed pups the same as adults no need to blend or mince anything, that's what their teeth are forkandydragons wrote:How do you prepare it all? And can a 11 week old pup start on wings? Re: Best food for a pup?
I'm vegetarian but have recently changed to RAW for Daisy's benefit, I;m coping fine! maybe your OH can be persuaded I'm mostly feeding the pre-prepared mince but also trying to introduce some bones for her teeth, so far chicken wings and turkey neck!
