Re: losing patience with sam
Ledger had been ok when I first got him then one lunchtime in the the park a group of kids set a few bangers off no further than 20-30m away from us and he has been a wreck ever since.
He pulled to come home after only being out for 5-10mins about half 5 tonight as they had started going off and is currently wrapped around my neck while I try to ignore him

Re: losing patience with sam
he fine there no fireworks tonight but he only been out for less then 15mins the lad need to grow some balls i swear, even motorbikes are scarring him these days
Re: losing patience with sam
Aw bless him, fireworks have been constant here since just after 5 seems someone has decided the park directly behind my house is the perfect place although tbh when Ledger has seen them through the window he has not barked. Not shaking or pacing any more just clearly reluctant to settle

Re: losing patience with sam
We have them going off again tonight just to the rear of our flat, Rocky is barking at everyone of them tonight, they are the loud bangers though and even made me jump when they went off.

Dogs change as they get older. What didn't bother them at 2 years old will scare the sh1t out of them at 6 or 7 years old.

Re: losing patience with sam
Poor dogs They might tolerate fireworks, but if some idiot lets off a big bang right close (and the other side of a field is right close) then they might well be terrified out of their wits, and it's terribly difficult to get them to be calm about subsequent bangs - it becomes hard-wired into them to panic. It's worse for dogs because they just don't understand it.
Look away now if you can't stand one of Lynda's little stories as an analogy.
Lynda's analogy:- (and bear in mind this concerns a human, not a dog)
One day my mum's next-door neighbours were paying her a visit, sitting chatting comfortably in her living room. Loud Rat-Tat-Tat at the front door. Jim (the neighbour) went white, shaky, distressed, and had to go back home. Jim's wife explained to my mum that years earlier, the police had banged at his door in a similar fashion to tell him and his parents that Jim's sister had been found murdered. Ever since, he panicked at the sound of a rap on the door. Now, he was a human and able to process logically that not every rap on the door would bring dreadful news, but he couldn't prevent the hard-wired terror that set in at the particular sound. How much more difficult for a dog.
