im losing the will to live
As much as i love my dog his biting is really starting to get me * off.not only is it extreamly annoying but can be very sore at times.
I need to knock this in the head,i understand hes a puppy and completly accept that it how staffys can be,i just need good advice on what to do everytime he bites,i make a yelp noise when he bites but that dont stop him.

The title of this post made my blood go cold.

That's the first thing worth reading that comes to mind. It's a technique that works and is recommended by puppy schools and vets as well. Just keep persevering and be consistent with your training. It will take a bit of time but it will work eventually. Just keep at it, we've all been there and some pups take longer than others. Positive outcomes only!

I can't really offer more advise than yelp, say no and then ignore, just stick with it you'll get there

Re: im losing the will to live
Puppyhood can be hard but don't despair it does get easier, patience & persistence and use the method from the link, it will change. I was covered in nicks and bruises from darcy it's completely normal for any puppy

When he bites, a firm 'NO!' And stop all interaction until he's calm, if he keeps biting then put him out the room for a minute for a time out. He will get the idea, that's how pups find out what stuff is, by mouthing it. When he's calm, give lots of praise so he knows the calm behaviour is the good behaviour and the bitey behaviour won't be tolerated.

Re: im losing the will to live
We used the same technique as Stuart except we yelped rather than say "no". It will work, don't give up, just keep at it. The withdrawal of interaction really gets to them and they soon catch on. Just remember he is still a baby.

Perhaps he isn't getting the message clearly enough. When you yelp and ignore, physically place him in to another room. He can only be with you if he doesnt bite.

Re: im losing the will to live
My baby boy (Frankie) is 13 wks old this week and for a few weeks his was a real pain. quick yelp and turning away from them really works. Even though he is still very mouth happy he is getting the hang of gentle biting already. And i always keep a chew toy hand to give my skin a rest. My advise is strong strong and hang in there. Just remember it don't last for to long..

Re: im losing the will to live
I would advice you to do this BUT I wouldn't give loads of praise and get excited because then he won't be calm no more and will go back to biting, maybe once he's calm give him a treat but still remain calm as well and don't get to excitedStuW wrote:When he bites, a firm 'NO!' Don't get nervous or annoyed though, that's what puppies are like and it's not to hard to stop them, just reward the dog when it's doing what you want and with no time it will be better behaved

Why two weeks? it will be a lifelong thing, all dogs need reminded now and then.

100% agree! Bailey is 20 months old and still mouths when he gets over excited and has to be reminded of his manners

Re: im losing the will to live
I honestly don't know what you expect from a puppy - any breed of puppy will do exactly the same thing, it isn't just staffords.
My Border Collies, BSDs & GSDs did exactly the same! And if you think a Stafford is bad, try having a Bull Terrier - much, much worse!
Have a bit of patience and be totally consistent & your pup will catch on.

Yep, they'll do that. I was crying a lot when Loki was a puppy because I was sure it was hopeless and he'd never get better, but he did eventually. Took much more than two weeks though, so don't set a time limit, he's only doing what comes naturally to him. Some take more than others to learn, but he will learn as long as you continue.

Don't loose heart... This can be a real testing time as they have those nasty needle teeth and they want to explore everything with their mouths. You need to be firm and consistent, also be prepared to get a few nips.
Here are my tips:
1. when the puppy bites don't pull away - This will turn in into a game of chase and the biting will continue.
2. Yelp followed by a firm no - All interaction stops - This is what his/her litter mates would do. If you bite me, I'm not going to play with you
3. Continue play and if it happens again - Yelp say no and place the puppy in another room for a brief moment (Behind a child gate is good if you have one)
Your puppy will still be learning bite inhibition so you need to help this process as this is again something it would learn off mum and litter mates.
I also played a game with Otis when we little which was to hide a treat in one of my hands and get him to touch my hand which he thought it was in, I would then open my hand, I found this help to teach him some manners as he would only get it if he licked my hand. Also interact in play with your puppy and correct them... It will come right in the end and Otis is 8 months nearly and he does occasionally forget but he has learnt to be gentle.
Keep up the training and let us know how you get on.
