Puppy Games?
Hey everybody!
Little pup is being very tiresome these past few days now he's settled in! He's very energetic (as expected of course!) and very very bitey! He's chewing everything in sight, including fingers, noses, toes and hair! He has an extensive toy collection, lots of soft toys, squeaky toys, ropes, bones, chews, etc. But throughout the day he becomes bored, I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions of some fun games I could play with him to tire him out?
Thanks guys!
Jasmine & Romeo x

Re: Puppy Games?
Hide and seek is a good one gets there mind going, you can but games where a treat is hidden and the dog has to find it, although Romeo may be a little young for that. I can't really think of anything else it has been so long since I had a pup I am sure a newer staffy mum can give you some ideas

Re: Puppy Games?
We just had a game of hide and seek with Rocky using small pieces of dried venison that is his favourite game.

Re: Puppy Games?
When you play hide and seek do you just hide a treat and let the puppy look for it?

Yeah, maybe under a blanket or pillow? Romeo is too young for that at the moment and gets bored, but he enjoys it if I hide under a blanket and call him, he has great fun 'digging' to find me

Re: Puppy Games?
Love the idea of hiding under a sheet, although I will have to get my husband to do this as I'm claustrophobic. Must remember to get my camera out ready to take a few snaps

Re: Puppy Games?
Peppa was the same at first but persistence has definitely helped with the biting. I found rolling a ball around really helped as chasing it around tired her out. I've never thought of playing hide and seek with her, it sounds like fun!x

My puppy loves a laser pen. She chases it for hours and it gives my seven year old dog a rest!x

Re: Puppy Games?
Bruno loves playing hide and seek, and loves to trample all over us if we hide under the blanket and make noises, he also loves a bit of tug but not too much, and we do half an hour training with him a day to give his mind a work out too.
My partner's football popped the other day so Bruno now has a new toy to play with. He can't get it in his mouth so he chases it round and round and has a great time with it. It's so cute to watch!

Re: Puppy Games?
Hide and seek here too does get their brains working.
I am not sure about a laser pen as it could lead to an obsession of chasing shadows. good old tug a war and chuck and fetch is better.

Romeo is obsessed with our 5 year old's football! its so sweet to watch him jumping on the football and chasing it around! :pRosie3 wrote:Bruno loves playing hide and seek, and loves to trample all over us if we hide under the blanket and make noises, he also loves a bit of tug but not too much, and we do half an hour training with him a day to give his mind a work out too.

Re: Puppy Games?
Ohhh the puppy nibbling stage :DI remember it well.
I used to play a game with otis in which I would hide a treat in one of my hands and he wouldn't get it until he kissed my hand and sat.
I also used to play the tree game: This meant that when Otis got over excited during play and started to bite me I would yelp say no immediately and stay still, make no eye contact and turn away from him for a short period then re engage with him. If the bite was very bad then I would exclude him into another room for 10 seconds to teach him that if you use your mouth inappropriately the fun stops. Unfortunately as I am sure you can appreciate puppy nibbles are going to happen until they have learned bite inhibition and with the games you decrease the amount of pressure you allow.
Also if you catch your pup chewing something they shouldn't quickly replace it with what they can have and praise them heavily they will soon cotton on
Oh and to help tire Otis out I would give him a treat ball with his food in it which was great - he didn't really get into hide and seek until he was older but it's a fantastic brain and getting them to use their noses is the best way to tire them out

Re: Puppy Games?
All fab advice above! Rocky also responds really well to 'where is your rope?' he always finds it so we use that to play hide and seek as well as treats!

Re: Puppy Games?
I know all to well that Jagger can outlast me and play for ever! Playing is awesome for pups but what people forget is pups also need mental stimulation, and this can also tire them out in an dif way than running and physical play time. There are toys called "Puzzle toys" you can even get creative and make them yer self too. But basically the pup has to do something on his/her own to get the treat or toy out of what ever its in. There are basic to advanced toys, google "puppy puzzle toys" Jagger will play and play and play to try to get his treats out. Once they catch on let them do it for a few days then replace it, just cycle the puzzles. it is Great mental stimulation. This helps if you have a chewer, pillow-ripper-upper, mouthy etc. pup ! good luck !

Re: Puppy Games?
Try hiding some treats under paper cups. He won't get bored because they're so easy to knock over & then he gets the treats.
