I only use flea stuff if I actually find fleas, and then I'd get something from the vets, probably a spot on like Advocate, and use it once or twice maximum.

I won't use a flea treatment as a routine application.

No, I've never used it I'm afraid, although I've heard of people whose dogs have had bad reactions to it - bad luck, maybe?

Garlic tabs each day. Have a treatments in the house should they need it. Think its frontline, kills ticks as well which is why I have it mainly.

I dont like frontline or any spot ons really. I only use louse powder and only if i find fleas, which i have on my cats before. So i did lexi as a precaution even though i did not find any fleas.

I used to use Advocate but heard its not good all the time.
So only use frontline mainly for the protection against ticks as they are rife in our forests. Big Grin

I have always had short-haired dogs and didn't think that fleas would be a problem with them.  I (by luck) saw one on my first Dobie's face immediately after she was playing with a long-haired dog and picked it off and threw it away (drowned it in water and swilled it down the sink). Then my second Dobie somehow got fleas and before I knew it the house was infested with them Crying or Very sad  Crying or Very sad Frontline got rid of them and I kept up the Frontline spot-on regime thereafter, with no further problems.

10 years on we got Kuchar and I must admit that I would never want to go through flea infestation again so he has been having spot-on Advocate every month.

Molly has advocate monthly but this is mainly due to her skin (demodex) it also treats fleas and worms. Have used frontline with diff dogs and no problems but with that we only used if we saw them.

I use frontline, although I did think about not using it, but with the walks we do through woods, and we often go places way out, its the worry of ticks, and for that reason I use frontline. I get mine from the vets.

I don't use flea spot on treatments regularly either. I have given Diz Spot On before in the past but not often, as I am not entirely happy about using it.

We are about to go away on a holiday in Wales next week where he will be on a beach and in forests and fields a lot on walks and I am wondering whether to treat him before I go or not. More so for ticks etc. more than anything.

Not sure what to do?? Any advice welcomed Smile x

I'd try and find out if where your staying is a tick hotspot. If not, then I, personally, wouldn't bother.

However, I certainly would consider getting him something to protect against lungworm as it's quite prevalent in Wales, as far as I know. Milbemax is one I use every 3 months.

Thanks Caryll I will certainly check out the local area for tick hotspots.

I've just looked up Milbemax and most websites say it requires perscription. Should I get it from my vet? Do you get it for small dogs or the next size up?

I get it from the vet & it goes on weight. Dempsey needs two tablets cause he's 30kilos, but I think it's one tablet under 25kilos.

If I remember rightly it costs me about £10 for two tablets. Horribly expensive, but it works.thumbs up

My big problem with diatomaceous earth is that it's very dangerous if you (or thE dog) breathe it in. FOr tHat reason I won't use it, plus of course it doesn't do anything to lungworms.

But to cause damage you or the dog need to breathe in a huge amount of it not just a little bit.
