Digging up the garden Empty Digging up the garden

Hiya, I've not posted on here before but do love having a mooch (mostly to think ah! I'm not alone with these problems!)
Harley is 9 months and I'm going to get him 'done' this month, he's got the usual 9month challenges like jumping and gone deaf, but the digging in the garden is getting ridiculous!
I'm hoping to get turf out there next year as it's just soil atm, but these giant holes are eveverywhere and some so deep my 2yr old would half disappear. He's awful for burying bones and hide chews/rings but I was wondering can you ever stop them digging? He's got free run of the garden and I can't be out there all the time with him, please help!
Also muddy half rotten bones in the house is sooo gross! Smile

Hiya why don't you come and introduce yourself here.

Firstly how often is he walked on a daily basis?
Afraid they are diggers, but its about distraction with a toy or something as it does sound like boredom.
Its also best to leave "getting him done" til 18 months/ 2 years. as they need to go through adolescence.
Sorry I cant be of much more help, but someone will be along soon Big Grin

Do you have a dedicated digging area - like a little sandpit with treats and toys that encourages them to only dig there? Smile

We have a sandpit (one of the cheap plastic shell type ones) that I bury frozen kongs in for Chiquito to dig up .. keeps him busy and provides a dig zone that he is allowed to use whenever he wants (it is especially good on hot days when he feels the need to dig a cool place to sleep).

I don't discourage Chiquito digging, however if you are looking for an effective technique to prevent, try placing a well inflated balloon in one or two places he usually digs holes. Place some dirt back over the balloon (to hide it) and leave him as usual to have access to the yard - the popping noise it makes when the claws and balloon make contact will do no harm but should give a sufficient enough scare to prevent further digging. Repeat as needed in other holes. Do note that I would strongly suggest only doing this while you are able to supervise - a strong 'leave' from you after the pop will reinforce the effect, and you will be able to remove all pieces of balloon that could be eaten straight away.

Bruno is a digger too. If he's left to his own devices he'll create a lovely big hole by the fence in our garden. Ratbag!

We just make sure to supervise him and stop or distract him if he looks like he's about to dig Smile good luck!

I like the idea of the dig pit Smile I don't know if it is partly the reason for your getting him "done" but i just want to make you aware that behaviours that are normal puppy and dog behaviours will not be altered by castration, and is not a miracle fix.

I know about digging...I have no garden left...shrubs, bushes and most plants are devoid of my garden. Half terrier half husky I dont stand a flipping chance as both breeds have a desire to dig. I gave up and just made sure around fences were okay the rest is theres...so I have a nice recreation of a lunar landscape to look out on each morning...to top it off marley lifted a shrub out a pot and "killed" it on the sofa a while back... that was nice to come home too.
