Getting a puppy
Hi
Its the first time I have been on here:)
I've owned two dogs before; a Doberman ( male) and a Red Staff (male)
They grow up together and we had our Vinny (Dob) for 12 yrs and our Buster for 13 yrs.
Now after 5 years we have decided to get another dog which will be a blue staff.
We have a viewing next Friday to a small litter of three; very healthy looking girls.
The mum is a brindle; mostly brown/fawny with a little blue. "very cute, looks just like a lady"
The father is a well known stud dog which I would name but I'm not sure if it will be allowed?- he is a very dark blue nearly black with a white chest. Both KC Registered.
If all goes well I will be bringing our Lucy home at the end of November, we will carry on feeding her the same food she is use too and then changing it slowly over 2 wks until she is fully onto Orijen for puppies.
Now my problem is... do I still go by her weight, look at the back of the bag to determine on how much I feed her or do I give her a little less to stop any discomfort in her tummy?
I'm thinking because she was a big puppy at birth it doesn't mean her insides will be able to cope with a larger amount of food for her age?

Hi & welcome from Darcy & me
Have a read through this, it's not recommended to buy a puppy from 2 blue parents because of the health implications :- http://staffy-bull-terrier.com/how_to_buy_a_dilution_colour_dog
Any questions just ask

Re: Getting a puppy
"Yes" I've heard talk about not using two blues for health reason.
But it has surprised me that these parents would be classed as two blues? The mother was brindle when she was born and only has a shade of blue mixed in her brindle when the season goes into Autumn. "Through the summer no blue is showing? "
Her parents ( puppies grandparents) were... black (male) and the mother brindle.
And could you explain to me please, why are they able to get KC registration

Re: Getting a puppy
Hi there
My little man is 16% inbread and both his parents were blue! It is suggested that above 10 to 12 % can be unhealthy.
However if you read up in this the people telling you it's not great to have two blues mate are right to a point.
There isn't really enough evidence to prove any illness dude to two blues but apparently they can have skin problems. Please see the links from other users on my thread.
You also have the issues of the colour of the dog changing. Please see my thread an pictures, he was as blue as blue at 8 wks and now at 17 wks is brindal blue
My little man (Baloo) is as healthy as they come at almost 18 wks.
All in all if she has got good medical history in her blood line she should be ok.

Re: Getting a puppy
Hello and welcome to the forum from me an the kids
I can only echo what has been said already . You challenge any good Breeder and they will all tell you the same to get a good Blue then one parent must be Black. People , Breeders , including KC Reg Breeders know of the problems / risks associated with CDA , insist on going ahead anyway which is irresponsible because they think they know better than the majority , and all because they want Blue pups as they can sell them for more money , which is ridiculous in itself as you should not pay any more money for a Blue than you would for any other colour of well bred pup
Take our advice or ignore it , your choice

DNA test - HC-HSF4 Hereditary Clear 23/10/2011 -

Re: Getting a puppy
I've just read the link from Steve again and its a good read. In hindsight i defiantly would have contemplated this if I had seen it before buying from a blue on blue.
I think the conditions are from what I have read are fairly rare.

Re: Getting a puppy
It's true that it is not guaranteed to happen but the problem is it is undetectable with any screening and can also pass through generations so just the fact that the parents look ok is not a guarantee .Echoid wrote:I've just read the link from Steve again and its a good read. The key to it all is the breeders that do this are not "good" breeders and have the money before the pups and i would never want to buy from someone like that if I had the knowledge . Regardless of the fact the dogs may ne KC reg they still fit in the BYB category . I unwittingly bought Tilly from one of these before I learned the error of my ways and fortunately for me up to now no problems but for sure I made every effort to make the best choice possible on getting no 2

(( wow)) Just got back in and I'm just wondering what I have started! >
You have all given me plenty to think about "thank you"
You might have stopped me from getting my fingers burnt, as well as making a very big hole in my pocket. (the puppy was expensive)
I think it might be best for me to have another look around and avoid blue dogs altogether. On saying this; it sounds as though I've been rushing into buying a puppy without any due thought, but I was always drawn to a black and white staff before I even thought of blue.
Looking for the right puppy as taken us 6 mths so far, maybe this will be third time lucky.

No Caryll I haven't check on the inbreeding coefficient.
With info I have already gleaned on this forum and off the internet, it wouldn't seem right to go ahead and get one of these puppies with the knowledge I have now!

Do not breed for colour alone
Good Blues must have a Black behind them

Re: Getting a puppy
Its really not difficult to find a Black Brindle with white staff or a Pied one for that matter , from what I've seen around the majority of the best examples are in this colour as they are definitely the most popularly bred aside blues with reds being in a little more of a minority but on the risesuzieJ wrote:(( wow)) Just got back in and I'm just wondering what I have started! >

EDIT - can I also ask how much you were being asked to pay ?? A guide on a good quality well reared KC pup would generally be around £ 600 and the price should be the same for all the litter not dependent upon markings or sex

What a turn around... I won't say too much unless I put a spanner in the works. But I think I have fallen in love with a black and white staff, won't really know until we meet each other tomorrow so fingers crossed?
The owner show's her dogs and is very keen on looking at the blood line before mating. We have talked over the phone and her blue staff has been mated with a black. "oh she is bloody gorgeous"
sorry
From now on my lips are close....
Until tomorrow morning

Just because some may be fine does not mean others will be. The chances are much higher. It is like two human dwarves having kids. The chance of dwarf children is MUCH higher, but they may and do have full size children.
