Darcy's ear
First topic message reminder :
I noticed last night that Darcy had a scratch in her ear, on closer inspection it seems her ear entrance is very red Andrew just got back from taking her the vet and the vet said its so inflamed and sore that she can't check so Darcy has to go in in the morning to be sedated so they can get checked out I'm so worried and emotional after my op now I'm scared senseless mummy worries

I can't believe I missed this Hayley - what a worry when you're just recovering from your op.
I hope the antibiotic drops do the trick. Big s to both of you

Re: Darcy's ear
They said it was a severe inner ear infection, tbh janey if I'd of been in tip top health and able to go the vet with her they'd probably have been able to look in her ear but it was just so sensitive she wouldn't let them, I'm not happy that they wouldn't treat for an ear infection but they were adamant it was a burst ear drum although they hadn't looked I just don't know what the reason for the sedation was because she wasn't aggressive or snappy with them it was just to painful to let them touch, definitely made me question wether we need to change the vet?janey wrote:What did the vet find anyway after sedating her? I would but we resist the vets if we can! I just know it took me weeks to even consider putting Moo under for x rays, and the vets supported me through it (even though they new) she needed them, and it took her 3 days to gain complete conscious. I could be speaking out of term but I would have suggested drops before sedating. The only reason I would or my vets would sedate would be op or x rays.
I totally understand whee you are, but don't think a vets should have pushed it, the anesthetic is more dangerous than a simple op, I would look for a new one, and ask questions first.

Re: Darcy's ear
Thanks janey & I wholeheartedly appreciate your input, Darcy is my first dog and I guess I trust the professionals when really I should have trusted my instinctsjaney wrote:I would but we resist the vets if we can! Re: Darcy's ear
As long as all is ok, thats what matters, but I would never have Moo put under unless it was the last thing I could do.

Re: Darcy's ear
Yes alls ok lovely but she's to return in 10 days so I'm not sure to make an appointment with the practice manager and ask why they thought it was necessary or just to source another vet, what would you do? Love you too xx

Re: Darcy's ear
Without knowing the complete insides and out I can't help really, if the vets thought it was adamant she needed to be put under then in my eyes they would have at least tried drops before (which is exactly what they have done now?)
I just know that being put under anesthetic is something very extreme....especially for an ear infection xXXX

Re: Darcy's ear
Yes I was very shocked when I read what they'd said. Daisy has had countless ear infections and its never been suggested. Just drops and tablets xx

Re: Darcy's ear
Tbh, I think vets are very, very nervous these days about getting bitten, not only them but their nurses. A dog has only to whip his head round "Ow, that hurts" and they'll muzzle him, and sedate him if he is "distressed".
I agree that antibiotic drops should have been tried first (in view of the obvious inflammation) before more invasive exploration was tried, but vets often feel they're onto a hiding or nothing eg if a patient subsequently complains that their dog had a tumour and their dog was only given anti-biotics.
If I were you Hayley I'd wait and see how the anti-biotics work. If they want to sedate Darcy again after your 10 days appt., then the questions should start!
Good luck
