Old dog / New puppy
We have our male (neutered) 15.5 year old Stafford who's been with us since he was 8 weeks old. He is pretty 'okay' for his age, obviously slowed right down, only explores our large garden, sometimes poos indoors, is a little senile, stiff hips, but generally very happy and content - vet says he's in very good helth/condition for his age.
Anyway we would like to get a new puppy Stafford bitch but not to the detriment of our old boy. Have other people introduced a new pup into the house with an old Stafford? If so was the relationship good - were both dogs happy - did it in fact perk the old dog up?
I would be interested to hear people's thoughts and experiences.
Thanks.

Re: Old dog / New puppy
I no experience of this but if it were me I would be worried about upsetting the older dog, especially if he's always been an only dog.

Re: Old dog / New puppy
I have only ever had one dog at a time so cannot say what it would be like, I would be very interested in other replies though.

Re: Old dog / New puppy
I'm experiencing that now, however it's with my 8 year old chihuahua who i've had since 6 weeks of age. He's very upset at my significant other and i because he's been used to being a single child all these years :/ however, he's not socialized, and more so just curious/scared of the new baby. I see him coming around though, with time.

Re: Old dog / New puppy
My Collie was 13 when we got Rolo at 8 weeks. Rolo had a crate and Flynn was allowed to go upstairs whenever he wanted peace. It worked well, they became the best of Buds. Just keep it fairly peaceful and respect the fact that the older dog needs to be able to get peace and quiet if they want it.
