Looking for a companion for our angel and need advice.
Hi guys.
We have a spayed girl Staffie called Angel who's 4 1/2 now. Shes a very submissive dog and was quite happy with her big brother Diesel, a similar age Staff boy who we had to have put down after an accident recently, they seldom fought (occaisionally the odd bark and swipe over food maybe 2-3 times in 2 years).
We now would like to get Angel a friend as she honestly seemed happier as part of a bigger pack rather than being an only dog, and have heard very varied comments about the best way to go - i.e. dog or bitch.
There is now a little bit of discussion in our household about the best breed/gender to now get. We would like to get a puppy as then we are in control of the training of him/her. I was erring towards a bitch as Angel walks off the lead fine and dosent show any agression to other dogs and this is important to me - Diesel couldnt go near other dogs and it was by far his most annoying trait as we couldnt walk him off the lead.
However, while that part would suggest getting another bitch, i have read lots of things saying that this is the most risky strategy for fighting when we are out and that a dog and a bitch is the safest combo.
What side would you err on - would a well trained staffy boy be good off the lead if socialised from a pup? - i have to be completely honest and say that in MY head i have reservations about this and think a bitch would be better or a dog from a different breed, my wife would like a Staffy boy as she misses her Diesel.....
Honest advice please and thanks in advance.

Hi & welcome from Darcy & me I'd say in my opinion to go for the opposite sex so in your case a boy, I'm sure if he's well socialised he'll be fine with other dogs, but do remember that like us hoomans they don't like every person/pooch they meet. But there are also members on here that have 2x girls/ 2x boys and it works for them.

Yes generally a boy/girl combo works best but it can work with two of the same sex. You can never be 100% sure of any dog getting on with others but if they are well socialised from an early age you have the best chance

I hope you find a friend for Angel. Have you perhaps considered a friend from a rescue centre?

Good luck in your search for a mate for Angel I have never had two dogs together so cannot really advize you which would be best for you. Again I would also always rescue.

As others said. Opposite sex has least risk. Each dog needs to be met on neutral ground to assess. Good luck! This is one area where 1+1 is more than 2! Lol. I love having a heard of dogs though!

Re: Looking for a companion for our angel and need advice.
So sorry about Diesel We have 2 girls who are inseparable but we've had them both from puppies so that is maybe why they get on so well (one is 5 months older than the other). I do think it's good though to have 2 dogs of the same breed, as they match each other in terms of temperament, exercise needs, etc. We see so many people with 2 Staffies, 2 Labs, 2 Collies, and so on..... I'm only speaking from experience though, but wish you the best of luck. It's so lovely for them to have a best friend to cuddle up with
