Re: Dangers of Annual Vaccinations
I asked my Vet and he said first booster after year and then you can do every 3 years

Re: Dangers of Annual Vaccinations
No booster for another 3 years! BUT. Some vets do recommend an annual leptospirosis vaccine.Darcy-may wrote:Good read :)Darcy has just had her first booster, not sure how I'll feel next year, booster or no booster?

I am confuzzled! I went with the no jabs for 3 years and when I went back they told me they needed to be restarted so she had to have 2 lots of jabs again.....I explained the 3 year thing and that she just needed a booster but they explained the vaccine did not last 3 years, and I do trust my vets as they have been great....

I think from what I can remember that this is the only one that Rocky has every year. The others would be every 3 years.Caryll wrote:No booster for another 3 years! BUT. Re: Dangers of Annual Vaccinations
I'm sure your vets are good, janey, but the core vaccines last for at least 3 years (possibly longer, and possibly even for life!). I think they saw a way of making a bit of extra dosh.janey wrote:I am confuzzled! Dempsey's just had his first booster since he was a year old & he won't have another (apart from Lepto) until he's 7 years old. That'll probably be the last one I bother with.

I'll still leave it the 3 years, just wondered why she had to start again and not just a booster, the prices where the same I think?

Re: Dangers of Annual Vaccinations
I don't know, janey. Maybe they honestly didn't know that they last 3 years now? I mean they used to only be guaranteed to last for a year, but advances have improved them & tests have proved they do last.
My vet was quite insistant that vets in the UK have over vaccinated for years.

I believe you, how do I tell the vets in 2 years time she just needs a booster and not a full course, I fought my corner last time!
I would stop them completely but if anything happened to her that I could have stopped I would never forgive myself Xx

Re: Dangers of Annual Vaccinations
I've agonised over this question. My problem has always been that we humans are vaccinated against polio, diptheria etc etc etc in our childhood, and then our immunity is there for the rest of our lives (which are about 7 times longer than a dog's) so I never could understand why dogs had to be vaccinated every year and I had to conclude that it all boiled down to easy money for the vets.

Re: Dangers of Annual Vaccinations
Can you book to see a specific vet at your practice? If you can, then ask to see the head honcho next time & arm yourself with a copy of the latest WSAVA guidelines....janey wrote:I believe you, how do I tell the vets in 2 years time she just needs a booster and not a full course, I fought my corner last time!

You don't need to be argumntative - just ask for their thoughts on the WSAVA guidelines. If they don't know anything about them, then change your vets.

Re: Dangers of Annual Vaccinations
Daisy had her vaccines last year when I got her, so was planning to go back 3 years after that, is that right or do I have to go again this year then wait 3 years?

Re: Dangers of Annual Vaccinations
If the vacines she had last year were her first ever, then she should probably have a first year's booster. If they were just a booster last year, then she only needs the core vaccines in two years time. But I'd spek to your vet about the leptospirosis vaccine, which is often still given annually, especially if you live near a water course, or there's a rat problem nearby.Sazzle wrote:Daisy had her vaccines last year when I got her, so was planning to go back 3 years after that, is that right or do I have to go again this year then wait 3 years?

Re: Dangers of Annual Vaccinations
Because she's a rescue I don't know what if any she'd had before, so I suppose it's best to go back for the first year booster?

Re: Dangers of Annual Vaccinations
Give the vets a ring & ask them.
Did the rescue vaccinate or did you?

Re: Dangers of Annual Vaccinations
I did, she had initial jabs with the rescue and was to have boosters with me but because she was then on medication she couldn't have them and they expired and we had to start again. Yeah will ring them, she looks like needing to go in for her ears again anyway
Thanks for your help Caryll x

Re: Dangers of Annual Vaccinations
Ooh now I don't know what to do, Vin had his year after one last year and have just had a card to say his next annual booster is due.
By what you are all suggesting I shouldn't have one done now for another 2 years?

Speak to the head honcho at your vets, armed with the guidelines I put a link up for (for janey).
