Letting us know he needs a wee
Hiya everyone
We have had our Brucie boy 3 weeks now and he is 6 months old today!
I just want some advice on how to get him to tell us he wants a wee as its getting a bit too cold to leave the door open all day/evening.
If the back door is shut he will just wee straight away he doesnt come and tell me to let him out. Just wondered if anyone jad any tips to help. I dont want to tell him off as he is trying to go outside clearly but he doesnt give me the chance to open the door for him
Also I want to encourage him to wee in the garden instead of the drive

Re: Letting us know he needs a wee
Dogs can't talk so you have to learn the body language. If your dog starts sniffing the floor you should immediately let him out. As for the garden rather than the drive, i would prefere the drive! You can hose it down and it wont turn the grass yellow and look manky. You can't hose the garden and believe me it ends up stinking.

As Hayley says look for the signs sniffing and wandering, then you need to let him out.

sorry I should have made my post clearer I already have 2 other dogs so am well versed in the art of watching for the sniffs and squats etc in the day but at nigh they come and whine or nudge me in the night if they want to go out whereas with Bruce he will just go wee by the back door.
The other dogs wee out the back garden so want him to do the same also trying to encourage him to pooh in the garden as have a 3 and 5 yr old who run outside before I have chance to get ot cleaned up sometimes

Re: Letting us know he needs a wee
All dogs are different, some are a little smarter and some are a little more independant. If he has been able to just go out whenever he wants to all summer then he wont understand why he cant now, so peeing at the door is him probably going ther to go out but finding it blocked, but i think it is still a positive thing, it shows he knows where to go. Perhaps a doggy door could be an option? Or if you have the time to, have him on a long line and if he gets up and pulls to the back door let him out, then he will know you are the magic door opener lol
as for the garden, physically take him to the grass and lots of praise for going there. if he goes on the drive just ignore and clean it using bleach.

Try teaching him a word he would understand for wee. When we first had Pixee, each time she did a wee, we said 'good girl toilet'. Now if I see her looking straight at me, its her way of saying I need the toilet, I will say' Do you want the toilet' and off she runs to the door to be let out. When I go out, I always call her to that door, let her out, and say, 'do a toilet' which she does.

I've trained all 13 of my previous and current fosters to respond to "wanna wee?"
Doesn't take long to learn and is something that can be asked as many times a day as needed.
Of the two I have here now, one is like a camel and only pees twice a day while the other likes to shoot out nearly every time I ask "wanna wee".
To avoid accidents, I ask "wanna wee" about 12 times a day, lol.

Re: Letting us know he needs a wee
he already knows the words wee wee and will go out when asked the problem just occurs at night when we are asleep he just goes to the back door and wees. My labrador is very vocal and will wake the house up telling us she needs to go but then I had her from 8 weeks not 5 months

When he wakes up put him outside .. if he pees or poops.. treat him and praise him . Accidents can occur but thats notmal .. so when they eake up/ half hour to an hour after they eat/ and when u return home after being out
