Bailey got Kennel cough
We took Bailey to vets because we thought he had got something stuck in his throat and kept trying to clear it, it turns out he has kennel cough. We are ashamed to say we knew nothing about it (first dog) We were flabbergasted to find out he could have picked it up anywhere (he's never been in Kennels) He seems on the mend now but my question is- is it worth getting the kennel cough vaccine! I have been doing some research and it seems there are various people who are against it as it only helps with certain strains of Kennel cough. Do anyone give there dog on here the vaccine! It has been horrible seeing him so poorly and not want his walks (which has been a nightmare as we have had to take him places we think there will be no dogs- we had to shout at a couple of people to please do not take their dogs near him-would hate for another dog to catch it)

Aww no poor bailey glad to hear he's on the mend, Darcy hasn't had the injection like you said it only covers certain strains, I'm sure someone will be along shortly who can help out

Rocky had this a couple of months ago, we are also considering the vaccine too. It lasted about a week vet gave him antibiotics and rimadyl. Best kept in away from other dogs as it is highly contagious.

Re: Bailey got Kennel cough
Thanks guys, I was under the impression it was a nasal spray rather than a injection! It has been hard walking him as he does not want to go far, after 10 min he wants to go home and when I see other dogs I shout to the owners he has kennel cough, please keep your dog away, its so sad because he has lots of doggy pals who want to say hello, and Bailey looks at us as if to say why cant I go and play lol

Re: Bailey got Kennel cough
I believe the vaccine for kennel cough is a nasal spray rather than injection. We were told not to walk Rocky for about a week - 10 days so we kept him in for that time. Very difficult to do but we did it.

Re: Bailey got Kennel cough
Really Kathy, our vet told us it was very contagious but she never told us not to walk him, she said keep him away from other dogs and try to walk him away from other dogs, worried now that we shouldn’t be taking him out at all!!!!

Re: Bailey got Kennel cough
I guess keeping them at home is the only way to ensure they don't mix with other dogs. Rocky quite was sleepy when he had it too so it was the best thing to do for him.

Re: Bailey got Kennel cough
My two older dogs have both had kennel cough recently, they live together so of course when one got it the other one got it a day or so later.
I personally wouldn't bother with the vaccine because kennel cough is rather like the human common Cold, there's so many strains of it that you can't vaccinate against them all and there's still a chance they'll get it at some point.
I hope Bailey is feeling better soon

Re: Bailey got Kennel cough
Hello = I looked after a dog while she was recovering from kennel cough. Best way to look at it is as if they have flu. They need lots and lots of rest, even if they want to go out and play. I also looked up "kennel cough remedy" on the internet and starting making a mixture of honey, blackcurrant jelly and a tiny bit of tea tree oil. Giving a tablespoon to the dog three times a day. It did clear up fairly quickly and she was fine. It's a pain but not a disaster and I'm sure Bailey will start feeling better very soon. It does sound horrific when they cough - I too thought my dog had swallowed a piece of glass or something.

Re: Bailey got Kennel cough
Hi! My boy has the kennel cough vaccine annually. He really doesn't mind it at all. I just hold a treat and ask him to "watch it" while the lovely lady vet squirts it up his nose. He has the treat, then after a couple of sneezes it's all forgotten about. I know people have very different opinions about vaccinations but as myself and Alfie are around many different dogs every day I'd rather be on the cautious side.
