Help finding my first Staffy
I'm looking to get my first dog, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
Only problem is that after around a months search, I am finding it very hard to find pups that are both suitable, and not too far away.
I live on the Essex/Suffolk border.
Where would you suggest I look?

Have a look on stamtaler, I assume your wanting not to buy from a back yard breeder. I'm sure someone with some personal experience will be along shortly in the mean time, Here's a few links to read through:-

Re: Help finding my first Staffy
Many people buy from that site but it is full of back yard breeders and irresponsible dog owners.
As for finding a good staffy i think the kennel club have some breeders in their books who hav a good record of healthy pups

One place to look is Champdogs
http://www.champdogs.co.uk/breeds/staffordshire-bull-terrier/puppies
If you see a pup/litter you like, come back on here & we'll let you know if its Inbreeding Coefficient is ok. Plus, check to make sure that all the relevent health tests have been carried out on the parents.

Best way is to contact the Kennel Club to find if there is any breeders in your area. Have you consider adopting from a shelter or a recue centre?

I know there are some rescues in that area, you could try one of them

Just doesn't seem to be much nearby. When there is, it is usually only the last one from the litter.
After a pup to integrate into the family (we have a cat), rather than a rescue dog

Many rescues have pups but don't advertise them so to speak, might be worth a contact. Good luck with your search and don't rush into buying one for the sake of it
Why not pop over and say hi

Re: Help finding my first Staffy
You can go on the mailing lists for Champdogs but if you do DO NOT assume that as you found them through Champdogs it is a good litter , please come back to us and we will help . Lots of us through our own experience / networks have links with some good breeders . You can always travel I know enough now that if I was looking for another pup then I would travel to the other end of the country to get one if certain breeders had litters. At the end of the day you only need to make the journey twice , 1 to choose and one to collect , in this modern age we have email , FB etc for updates and so on.Jsmpick wrote:Just doesn't seem to be much nearby. KC Breeders lists are good but you can end up with high priced showstock and newer breeders have to start somewhere
If you are buying a pup then my best advice would be
1) Make sure the pups are from KC reg parents and fully health tested - THERE IS NO OTHER WAY DO NOT SUPPORT BACKYARD BREEDERS
2) Find a breeder with a nice homely background not a time weathered breeder that just turns out litter after litter
3) Forget about them if they don't interrogate you
4) Check out their FB if you get on a list , never buy a pup from FB so don't misunderstand but make friends with the breeder on there and check out there posts is it all updates and keeping in touch with previous puppies and owners ( Tommy's Breeder is in this category)
5)You should realistically expect to pay no more than 550 - 600 for a nice KC pup all tested etc , if someone wants more they are greedy and out for the money rather than good pups and their welfare
6) Never get a blue pup from a Blue/ Blue mating
7) Ask us before committing , ideally before visiting as if you are like me once you visit the heartstrings are tugged and you come back with the one you fell in love with which might not really be a very good pup
